1. National Sports Day  celebrated on the 29 August
 National Sports Day was celebrated on the 29 August throughout the country.
 National Sports Day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of hockey player Dhyan Chand. This day is celebrated by organizing friendly matches between different Indian hockey teams at the Dhyan Chand National stadium in New Delhi.



2. Q1 GDP growth at 5.7%, highest in nine quarters
 Signalling a turnaround for the economy and adding to the current festive cheer, the first quarter (April-June) GDP growth came in at a higher-than-expected 5.7 percent.
This was higher than the 4.7 percent growth recorded in April-June quarter last year, official data released on Friday showed.
This latest growth performance is the highest in the last nine quarters.

3.Cristiano Ronaldo crowned UEFA Best Player in Europe
Cristiano Ronaldo was on Thursday named the UEFA Best Player in Europe, defeating Bayern Munich duo Manuel Neuer and Arjen Robben for the prestigious award.
Ronaldo earned 24 votes from a panel of European football journalists to claim the title in Monte Carlo just after the draw was made for the Champions League group stage.
Neuer was second on 19 votes, ahead of his Bayern teammate Robben who took nine.
Ronaldo, 29, scored a penalty in Real’s 4-1 extra-time win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final in May. But he been short of fitness, and had a disappointing World Cup in Brazil as Portugal were eliminated in the group stage.

4. P V Sindhu enters World Badminton Championships semis, assured of bronze
COPENHAGEN: Indian teen sensation P V Sindhu assured herself of a second consecutive bronze medal at the World Championship but it was curtains for star shuttler Saina Nehwal after she suffered a straight-game loss in the women's singles quarterfinals on Friday.
The 19-year-old Sindhu, who clinched the bronze at the 2013 World Championship in China, produced another gritty performance to see off All-England champion Shixian Wang of China 19-21, 21-19, 21-15 at Ballerup Super Arena.
Earlier this month, Sindhu had won a bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland

5. IPL betting: Mudgal panel files probe report

 Justice Mukul Mudgal committee, which was directed by the Supreme Court to conduct a probe against ICC President N Srinivasan and 12 prominent players in the IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal, on Friday filed its report in a sealed cover before the apex court.
A bench headed by Justice T S Thakur took the report on record after a senior advocate mentioned the matter and fixed it for hearing on September one.

6.Forex reserves down by $810.7 million
 The country’s foreign exchange reserves declined by $810.7 million to $318.579 billion for the week ended August 22, on account of drop in foreign currency assets.
Last week, the reserves had risen by $43.3 million to $319.39 billion, after falling for two consecutive weeks. Foreign currency assets (FCAs), a major constituent of overall reserves, dipped by $783 million to $291.318 billion for the week ended August 22, the Reserve Bank of India said in its weekly statement on Friday.

7.Manipur Governor Vinod Kumar Duggal resigned
 Vinod Kumar Duggal resigned as Manipur Governor. He was appointed as governor of Manipur by President Pranab Mukherjee on 23 December 2013.
Thus, Vinod Kumar Duggal became the ninth governor to resign since the NDA Government came to power in May 2014.

9. DoT may advance completion of NOFN project to June 2016

 The Department of Telecom (DoT) is likely to work towards bringing forward the target dates for completion of National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) to June 2016 as the project is key to various ‘Digital India’ initiatives.
The government has already approved the Digital India programme comprising various projects worth about Rs. 1 lakh crore to transform the country into a digitally empowered knowledge economy.
