1. Sumitra Mahajan rejects Congress demand for Leader of Opposition status
The Congress demand for being accorded the status of Leader of Opposition to its group chief in Lok Sabha was on Tuesday rejected by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.
“I have gone by rules and tradition,” she told PTI on her decision not to recognise the Congress leader in the Lok Sabha as the Leader of the Opposition.
The Speaker’s decision rejecting the Congress demand has been conveyed in a letter to the Congress party. Congress president Sonia Gandhi had written to Ms. Mahajan seeking the status of the Leader of Opposition to Mallikarjun Kharge who is the party’s group leader in the House.
The Speaker had also taken the opinion of Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi who had said that Congress does not have the numbers so that its floor leader can be granted the status of Leader of Opposition.
2. PM invites ideas from people on institution to replace Planning Commission After announcing his intention to replace the Planning Commission with a new institution,
the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has invited ideas from the general public for the new institution.
"We envision the proposed institution as one that caters to the aspirations of 21st century India and strengthens participation of the states.... Let the ideas flow," Modi said in a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office. An open forum has been created on the Web site www.mygov.nic.in for suggestion.
This development is taking place at a time when many possible names and structure of the proposed structure is doing round.
Various media reports said that the name could be National Development and Reforms Commission (NDRC), which will be headed by the Prime Minister and will have 5-8 members. There are also indications that veteran Shiv Sena leader Suresh Prabhu will be Deputy Chairman of the proposed body.
3. Sri Lanka denies entry to UN probe team
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Tuesday said the U.N. team investigating Sri Lanka’s rights record will not be permitted to come into the country.
4. Indirect tax collections rise 3.9% in April-July
The Central government’s indirect tax collections grew 3.9 per cent in April-July this year to Rs1,54,350 crore (Rs1,48,588 crore).
While both customs and excise duty collections declined albeit marginally, service tax collections saw a robust 16.4 per cent increase for the period under review.
For the month of July, all three heads of indirect taxes – excise, customs and service tax saw an increase at a single digit level.
Till end July this fiscal, the Centre has achieved 24.8 per cent of the total budget estimate for indirect tax collections this fiscal.
The Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had already said that indirect tax collections target for the current fiscal was a major challenge for the revenue department, but had also emphasised that the target was achievable.

Private mutual fund house ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company, which is ranked after HDFC Mutual Fund and above Reliance Mutual Fund on the basis of assets under management, has been named as the “most trusted fund house” by the report this year on a variety of key parameters.
