1. ISRO creates history with Mars Mission
India on Wednesday became the first country to successfully put a spacecraft around Mars in its first attempt. The ambitious Rs. 460 crore Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), launched on November 5 last year, had a perfect Mars Orbit Insertion (MOI) to get captured into the Mars orbit.
The Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) and the eight small thrusters on board India's orbiter to Mars ignited on time at 7.17 a.m. The spacecraft's velocity was slowed down 1.09 metres per second against the targeted 1.1 metres per second. At the end of the burn-time of 24 minutes, the spacecraft was inserted into the Martian orbit.
"The periapsis achieved was 427 km and the apoapsis was 78,500 km. The final values will be obtained after several hours," said Mission Director, MOM, V. Kesava Raju.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Bangalore on Tuesday night for another engagement, spent nearly two hours watching India's moment of glory.
"India has successfully reached Mars. History has been created today. We have reached the unknown and achieved the impossible," Mr.Modi said.

2. Supreme Court quashes allocation of 214 coal blocks

The Supreme Court on Wednesday cancelled all but four of the 218 coal block allocations it had declared illegal and arbitrary in its August 25, 2014 verdict.
Acting on the Central government's assurance that it is “fully prepared” to face the cancellation of the coal block allocations and will not have any difficulty to take the coal industry forward, a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India R.M. Lodha passed the order, opting that the "natural consequence" of its August 25 judgment declaring the allocations would be to cancel them.
On the Centre's request to save 40 functional coal blocks and six ready-to-function ones, the court said 42 of them would continue to function for the next 6 months, till March 31, 2015, to give the government "breathing space to manage the emerging situation".
These 42 blocks would have to pay an additional levy of Rs. 295 per metric tonne of coal extracted to make up for the loss highlighted in the CAG report in the coal scam.
The four functional coal blocks exempted from cancellation are two ultra mega power projects, one operated by NTPC and another by SAIL.

In a bid to focus on quality and efficiency in banks, an RBI panel on Tuesday recommended that banks plan for their talent and leadership requirements at least five years ahead, and stressed that placement of employees needs to be based on well-laid out parameters rather than being ad-hoc or discretionary.
“Talent and leadership requirements need to be planned strategically over the long term, say over five years and above,” Reserve Bank of India said in a report released by a committee on Capacity Building in Banks and Non-Banks.

Dushyant was the only athlete to manage a podium finish as he grabbed a bronze in the men’s lightweight single sculls event on what turned out to be a mixed day for the Indian contingent.
The strong shooting squad, which had accounted for the bulk of medal collection so far, drew a blank on Wednesday which led to India dropping one place in the medal table.
