Current Affairs of 29 September

1. Indian-Israeli PMs meet for the first time in more than a decade In the first meeting between Indian and Israeli Prime Ministers
in more than a decade, Prime Minister Modi asked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to explain Israel’s perspective on the Islamic State (ISIS). According to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin, the two leaders discussed the situation in West Asia. “Given that Israel is well placed in that region, the Prime Minister requested and was given a briefing of their understanding of the situation.”
The conversation takes significance given it came before Mr. Modi’s dinner meeting with US President Barack Obama in Washington, as well as Mr. Modi’s address to the council for foreign relations to outline his government’s foreign policy objectives.
Mr. Modi and Mr. Netanyahu also discussed ways of increasing bilateral ties in the areas of agriculture, water management and urban development. Israel is one of India’s largest defence suppliers, and Mr. Modi discussed his government’s decision to open up Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the field to 49 per cent. He also told Mr. Netanyahu that Israel should consider defence partnerships based in India, in line with his “Make in India” initiative. According to The Jerusalem Post, Mr. Netanyahu said “the sky is the limit” for relations between both countries.

2.  Panneerselvam takes oath as Tamil Nadu CM
Jayalalithaa's loyalist O Panneerselvam was today sworn-in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, succeeding his party supremo two days after her conviction in an illegal assets case.
An emotional Panneerselvam was seen wiping his eyes as he was sworn-in as Chief Minister by Governor K Rosaiah at the Raj Bhavan.
The new Chief Minister’s Cabinet was also sworn-in by the Governor.
Government officials had feigned ignorance since morning when journalists of various establishments contacted them for information about the swearing-in ceremony.
63-year-old Panneerselvam, who is the AIADMK Treasurer, was unanimously elected as Leader of AIADMK Party Legislature yesterday following Jayalalithaa’s conviction and subsequent disqualification as MLA following her four-year prison term awarded by the Bangalore Special Court in the Rs. 66.65-crore disproportionate assets case.

3. Indian diaspora makes mark in foreign policy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reception at Madison Square Garden is a way of thanking the Indian-American community members who played a big part in his electronic campaign and election funding. It is a powerful message to U.S. President Barack Obama and the U.S. administration ahead of his meetings in Washington.
“Mr. Obama is a democratic man. When he sees the response of the crowds here, how can he not understand the popularity of a man, who like him, has come up the hard way?” explains BJP leader Ram Madhav, who has been a key organiser of Mr. Modi’s events in the U.S.
The other message is that the political clout of the Indian-American community that has rallied around Mr. Modi in large numbers can no longer be ignored. At 2.8 million, they may number just 1% of the U.S. population, but they are the most educated and richest minority, according to a Pew survey in 2013.
They are now significant part of Republicans and Democrats, as well as government, and Mr. Modi is spending a considerable amount of time engaging with the community as well as governors like Nikki Haley and Congressmen Tulsi Gabbard and Ami Bera. It cannot go unnoticed that the three officials who will serve as Mr. Obama’s interface with Mr. Modi — Assistant Secretary of State Nisha Biswal, her deputy Atul Keshap, and the newly- nominated U.S. Ambassador to India Richard Rahul Varma — are all Americans of Indian descent.
