  1. Cilic crushes Nishikori to claim US Open title
 Croatia’s Marin Cilic swept past Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-3 6-3 6-3 to win the U.S. Open
 on Monday and reach the pinnacle of the sport one year after a doping ban kept him out of the year’s final grand slam.
The big-serving Croatian overwhelmed a weary Nishikori in one hour, 54 minutes to clinch a ruthless victory and deny his 10th-seeded opponent’s bid to become the first Asian man to win a grand slam.
With the win, 14th seed Cilic becomes the first Croatian to win one of the sport’s four grand slam championships since his coach Goran Ivanisevic celebrated a Wimbledon victory in 2001.


2. Counter-terrorism, growth likely to dominate Obama-Modi agenda
 U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday hinted that his summit meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi here at the end of the month may to large extent focus on counterterrorism and security cooperation policies, including within its ambit the rise of Islamic State in Syria and Iraq and prospects for regional stability after the U.S.’ Afghanistan drawdown in months ahead.
A White House statement emphasised that Mr. Obama looked forward to welcoming Mr. Modi to the Washington during September 29-30 and to working with him to “fulfil the promise of the U.S.-India strategic partnership.”

3.Basel III: RBI’s new norms a positive for banks, says Moody’s
The new norms by Reserve Bank of India for banks to raise Tier-I capital under Basel III regulatory standard are credit positive for Indian banks, in particular public sector banks, according to credit rating agency Moody’s.
“They will make the instruments more attractive to investors, broaden the investor base for additional Tier 1 (AT1) securities to include retail investors and allow banks to have a higher proportion of AT1 capital in their Tier 1 capital,” Moody’s said in its credit outlook report.
On September 1, the RBI revised some of its rules governing instruments that qualify as bank capital under Basel III.
The RBI cut the minimum maturity for Tier 2 capital that banks can issue to five years from 10 years. It also allowed retail investors to buy Tier 1 capital.
Compliance by March 2019
Indian banks have to comply with Basel III capital norms by March 2019, including maintaining a minimum capital adequacy ratio of 11.5 per cent.

4. SBI group to launch mobile service to help small account-holders
With account opening for those at the bottom of the pyramid gathering steam under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, State Bank of India (SBI) and its five associate banks plan to empower such account-holders with a customer call facility.
The proposed facility is aimed at helping customers get an update on, among other things, available balance, last five transactions and cheque book request on their mobile phones.

5. Govt to open discussion on ‘100 smart cities’ via portal
The Ministry of Urban Development will invite discussions from all stakeholders, including the general public, through a web portal for its ambitious ‘100 smart cities’ initiative.
“A web portal www.smartindia.gov.in will be up and running in 8-10 days and will be open for intense discussion from everybody,” a senior official in the Ministry of Urban Development told

6. Chinese President to begin India visit from Gujarat
 Chinese President Xi Jinping is slated to visit Gujarat on September 17 and would be received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Mr. Modi will receive Mr. Xi at the Ahmedabad airport on September 16. Mr. Xi will be hosted at the hotel Hyatt in the city,
On September 17, which happens to be Mr. Modi’s birthday – two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) will be inked between Gujarat and China. 

7. Govt to replace affidavits with self-attested documents
 The Centre will replace the requirement of furnishing affidavits with self-attested declarations in a major chunk of government-related work and an official order in this regard will be issued soon, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said on Tuesday.
“This thought (to promote self-attestation) was in the process. But it was not been implemented in the full way. No notification has been issued on it. It will be done soon,” he told a press conference on works done by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions during the 100 days of the NDA government.


8. Amul pays tributes to Kurien on death anniversary
 Amul fondly remembered its founder Verghese Kurien, Milkman of India, on his second death anniversary on Tuesday.
Kurien, 90, had passed way on September 9, 2012, at Anand. He made Anand his home for life after he landed in the small town on May 13, 1949, as a government employee to look after the operations of a government-owned creamery.
