1. Kailash Satyarthi, Malala win Nobel Peace Prize
 An Indo-Pak and Hindu-Muslim combination of
Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousafzai today shared the Nobel Peace Prize honours for 2014 for their work on promoting child rights in the troubled sub-continent.
60-year-old Satyarthi, who runs an NGO in India that has been in the forefront of rescuing children from forced labour and trafficking, and 17-year-old Malala, who shot to the limelight after Taliban militants pumped bullets into her for advocating education for girls, were named by the Nobel Peace Prize Committee for the top global award this year.
“The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2014 is to be awarded to Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousafzai for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the rights of all children to education,” the jury said.
Satyarthi, who runs NGO Bachpan Bachao Aandolan (Save Childhood Movement), has maintained the tradition of Mahatma Gandhi and headed various forms of peaceful protests, “focusing on the grave exploitation of children for financial gain,” the Nobel committee said.

2. India’s first national policy on mental health launched

 The union health ministry on Friday launched the country’s first ever mental health policy to provide access to good quality treatment to mentally ill people with the focus on those living in poverty.
The policy, launched by Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, is backed up by the “Mental Health Action Plan 365” which spells out the specific roles to be played by the Centre, the state governments, local bodies and civil society organisations.
The government also came out with two booklets providing training modules for general physicians or the common man.
“Universal access to mental health care is a specific goal of the government. It would find substantial articulation in the evolving National Health Policy and National Health Assurance Mission (NHAM),” Harsh Vardhan told the media after the launch.
The minister also said that Oct 10, which is observed as the world mental health day, would now also be observed as the national mental health day.


3. Sharif convenes top-level meeting to discuss LoC tension
 Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is meeting with Army chiefs and advisers over shelling along the India-Pakistan border.
Mr. Sharif told the National Security Committee that he convened the meeting on Friday in Islamabad, to discuss “tensions” along the Line of Control. His remarks were carried on Pakistani state television.
The shelling began on October 1, 2014 as Muslims in the region were preparing to celebrate the Eid-al-Adha festival.

4. Book titled A Man and A Motorcycle written by Bette Dam on Hamid Karzai launched
A book titled A Man and A Motorcycle, How Hamid Karzai Came to Power written by Bette Dam was launched in September 2014. Bette Dam is a Dutch journalist based in Afghanistan.
he book reveals about the life of former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai and his journey towards the highest office of the land and the situation in Afghanistan.
In the book, Dam writes that Karzai was under a lot of pressure from the west as well as key domestic players; however, he was more in touch with the internal figures than the west.

5. Leela Samson resigned as Sangeet Natak Akademi chairperson
Leela Samson resigned as the Chairperson of Sangeet Natak Akademi on 30 September 2014. Her resignation has been accepted by Union Ministry of Culture.
62-year-old Samson submitted her resignation as the Chairperson of the Sangeet Natak Akademi a year before her term ends.
Samson, an eminent Bharatnatyam dancer was appointed as the chairperson of the Akademi in August 2010 for a period of five years by the Union government.

6. DIPP constituted a special team Japan Plus to fast track Japanese investments

The Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) on 9 October 2014 constituted a special management team to facilitate and fast track investment proposals from Japan. The team was named as Japan Plus.
Japan Plus will be coordinated by Kenichiro Toyofuku from METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry), Government of Japan and will comprise of four Indians from Government of India and two Japanese officials from METI.

7. World Post Day observed globally on 9 October
World Post Day was observed globally on 9 October 2014. This day
 is observed to create awareness of the role of the postal sector in people’s and businesses’ everyday lives as well as its contribution to the social and economic development of countries.
On this day, various programme and activities were undertaken with an aim to generate awareness of their Post’s role as well as activities among public and media on a national scale.

8. Veteran journalist Madhav Vittal Kamath died
eteran journalist Madhav Vittal Kamath died on 9 October 2014 following a cardiac arrest at Kasturba Hospital in Manipal. He was 93. He was the former chairman of Prasar Bharati Board.

9. Anoop Jain won 2014 Waislitz Global Citizen Award
Anoop Jain won 2014 Waislitz Global Citizen Award. He was awarded for his exemplified values of a Global Citizen through his work in founding Humanure Power (HP) in Bihar in 2011 that builds community sanitation facilities in rural India.
The award carried a cash prize of 100000 US dollar in recognition to the work. Anoop Jain was chosen the winner after getting the maximum votes by people from across the world

10. Union Government launched Pashmina Promotion Programme (P-3)
Union Government launched Pashmina Promotion Programme (P-3) on 8 October 2014. The P-3 programme was launched at Pashmina Dehairing Plant Complex, Skalzangling, Leh by the Union Minister of State for Textiles (Independent Charge) Santosh Kumar Gangwar.
The Pashmina Promotion Programme will be successfully implemented in a time-bound manner so that pashmina wool production can be increased up to 65 tonnes during 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17).
