1. Karur Vysya Bank gets IDRBT award
Karur Vysya Bank has bagged the Best Bank Award for Business Intelligence Initiatives among small banks.
The bank's Managing Director and Chief Executive, K Venkataraman, received the award from the Governor of Reserve Bank of India, Raghuram G Rajan. The IDRBT Banking Technology Excellence award is for 2013-14. IDRBT has recognised KVB for this award for the sixth year in a row.
2.NTPC to build 8,152 toilets under ‘Swacch Bharat’ campaign State—owned power major NTPC has committed to build 8,152 toilets in government schools under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cleanliness drive.
“Under ‘Swachh Bharat—Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan’ NTPC has committed to take up work for 8,152 toilets in government schools from the list available on Ministry of Human Resource and Development website,” the company said in a statement.
A list of identified toilets spanning over 18 states and 57 districts has been given to the Ministry of Power for confirmation of allocation of these toilets to NTPC by HRD Ministry.
As per the call given by PM, Power and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal has given leadership to the companies under him to take special initiatives to participate in this scheme, the statement added.
A host of corporate houses have committed to construction of one lakh toilets in schools across the country under their CSR initiative.
TCS, Toyota Kirloskar, Bharti Foundation and Ambuja Cements have already committed for the initiative.
PM on Independence Day had set a target of one year for construction of toilets, with separate washrooms for girls, in all government schools.
3.India’s forex up $1.30 billion
After five consecutive weeks of falls, India’s foreign exchange
reserves grew by $1.30 billion to $312.73 billion for the week ended October 10, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data showed.
The reserves had fallen by $2.75 billion to $311.42 billion for the week ended Oct 3. It had slipped by $1.41 billion to $314.18 billion for the week ended Sep 26. Again the reserves went into decreasing trend falling by $101.3 million to $315.59 billion for the week ended Sep 19.
The exchange reserves declined by $1.61 billion to $315.69 billion for the week ended Sep 12 and for week ended Sep 5 the reserves lunged by $1.32 billion to $317.31 billion.
According to the RBI’s weekly statistical supplement, foreign currency assets, the biggest component of the forex reserves, rose by $1.29 billion at $286.88 billion in the week under review.
The foreign currency assets had plunged by $1.80 billion at $285.58 billion in the previous week.
The RBI said the foreign currency assets, expressed in US dollar terms, include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of non—US currencies such as the pound sterling, euro and yen held in reserve.
India’s reserve position with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) gained $3.3 million to $1.54 billion.
The value of special drawing rights (SDRs) was up by $9.3 million at $4.29 billion.
4. USIBC to attend Vibrant Gujarat Summit next year
The US India Business Council (USIBC) would attend the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in Gandhinagar next year as a partner organisation, a media release has said.

Veteran actress Maggie Smith was made a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour by Queen Elizabeth.
The 79-year-old ‘Downton Abbey’ star was made a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour, one of Britian’s highest honours, at a special ceremony at Windsor Castle in Berkshire, England in recognition of her services to drama over the past six decades, reported BBC online.
The actress joins an elite group of just 65 other Companions of Honour, including Professor Stephen Hawking, Judi Dench and Ian McKellen, but the prestigious accolade carries no title.
The ‘Harry Potter’ star enjoyed a private conversation with the Queen upon being presented with her gold badge, but declined to speak after the ceremony.

AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa has been released from jail.
Earlier, the Special Court here today issued the order for release of AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa from jail here in accordance with the Supreme Court order granting her bail in the disproportionate assets case.
The release order by Special Judge John Michael D’Cunha came after a bond for Rs. two crore was furnished and surety of assets offered. Copy of the Supreme Court order was also produced before the court by Jayalalithaa’s lawyers.

The sixth edition of India International will be held here from October 30 to November 3 at Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS).
The five-day exhibition and workshop will focus on agro machinery expo, processed food expo, animal husbandry, organic aquaculture organic spices, organic coconut based farming systems, farm mechanisation, quality assurance, value additions and market linkages.
The expo will also be a space for buyer-seller meet on fruits, spices and organic products as well. It will be jointly organised by the Foundation for Organic Agriculture and Rural Development and KUFOS in association with NABARD, Department of Fisheries, Department of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, MPEDA, Directorate of Cashew & Arecanut, Coconut Development Board, Kerala Agricultural University and Veterinary University.
