1. Denis Mukwege won prestigious Sakharov human rights prize
Congolese gynaecologist Denis Mukwege Mukengere
 won the prestigious Sakharov human rights prize 2014. He was awarded for his efforts in helping thousands of gang rape victims in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The pro-Western Ukraine democracy and rights group EuroMaidan which led the popular revolt against deposed president Viktor Yanukovych was declared as the runner-up.
The third candidate was prominent Azerbaijani rights activist Leyla Yunus who is currently detained on treason charges of spying for arch-enemy Armenia.

2. Sebi to sell shares held by 9 entities to recover Rs 4 crore
 Sebi has decided to sell shares held by nine entities in various companies to recover penalties worth nearly Rs 4 crore imposed on them for violations of securities market norms.
The share sale would take place on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE from November 20, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said in separate orders dated October 21.
Sebi said that the transactions in the shares would take place “till entire dues under the certificate are recovered in full or till the attached shares of the scrips are exhausted, which ever is earlier”.
The market regulator had issued attachment orders against nine entities - Saral Website, Monalisha Securities, Usha India, Usha Ispat, Ankur Cultivators, Nisha Aggarwal, Pradeep Aggarwal, Harish Sisodia and Gordon Herbert.
However, Sebi said that these entities had failed to pay the dues.
Sebi has to recover as much as Rs 2.27 crore from Gordon Herbert and an amount of Rs 1 crore from Ankur Cultivators.
Besides, the regulator has to recover dues ranging from Rs 1.28 lakh to Rs 20 lakh from the rest of the entities.

3. Police Commemoration Day observed
The Police Commemoration Day was observed in New Delhi with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh as chief quest. The day was observed as a mark of respect to brave police martyrs, who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
During the celebration, the Memorial parade was held and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh announced a national Police Memorial will be set up soon as homage to the police.
About Police Commemoration Day-The Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police of States and Union Territories held in January 1960 decided that 21 October would henceforth be observed as Police Commemoration Day.

4. Uttarakhand Cabinet approved reconstruction of Kedarnath temple area

Uttarakhand Cabinet on 20 October 2014 approved blue print for reconstruction work around Kedarnath temple and adjoining areas that was destroyed due to floods in 2013. The blue print for reconstruction was prepared by the state disaster management department of Uttarakhand.
It was also decided to assign the rebuilding work around the shrine to the Badri-Kedar temple committee which will implement it in consultation with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
The reconstruction work around the temple will be carried out in six phases and also include building a good quality motor road between Rudraprayag and Sonprayag.

5. International Stammering Awareness Day observed across the world
International Stammering Awareness Day (ISAD) was observed on 22 October 2014. The day was observed to raise public awareness about the people who have the speech disorder of stuttering, which is also known as stammering.
During the ISAD, Stammering associations like British Stammering Association (BSA), individuals and groups around the world organised events to raise awareness of stuttering.
The British Stammering Association (BSA) conducted ISAD Online conference titled we speak with one voice in which people posted comments and questions about stuttering or stammering. This ISAD online conference is conducted annually between 1 October and 22 October. It also had Ask an Expert section about stuttering or stammering.
First International Stammering Awareness Day was observed in 1998. It is joint project between International Stuttering Association (ISA), International Fluency Association (IFA) and European League of Stuttering Associations (ELSA).




6. Union Government constituted Vishwanathan committee to provide Bankruptcy code for SMEs
Union Government constituted Vishwanathan committee to provide Bankruptcy code for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).  The committee was formed under the Union Finance Ministry.
The committee will be headed by former Lok Sabha secretary-general and former law secretary T K Vishwanathan. The committee will prepare a report on corporate bankruptcy framework for SMEs by February 2015.
The formation of the committee is the first step to provide small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with an exit option in case of bankruptcy. The announcement is in tune with a budget promise made by Union finance minister Arun Jaitley to introduce an entrepreneur-friendly legal bankruptcy framework.

7. Mayank Ashar appointed as MD and CEO of Cairn India
Mayank Ashar  was appointed as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Cairn India with effect from 17 November 2014.
Cairn India Limited was without a full-time CEO after the resignation of Rahul Dhir in August 2012. The company first appointed P Elango as Interim CEO who resigned in May 2014. After his resignation, Sudhir Mathur, the Chief Financial Officer of the company was given additional charge of interim CEO.

8. Government ordered merger of NSEL with its holding company FTIL
Union Government on 21 October 2014 ordered merger of the scam-hit firm, National Spot Exchange Ltd (NSEL) with its holding company Financial Technologies India Ltd (FTIL).
The Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs has issued a draft order by invoking Section 396 of the Companies Act for the merger. This is the first time that a listed entity in the private sector has been involved in a Section 396 order of the Union Government.

9. Anita M Singh appointed as Chief of Staff of NSD in US Justice Department
Indian-American Anita M Singh on 21 October 2014 was appointed as Chief of Staff and Counselor in the National Security Division (NSD) of the US Justice Department.
Her appointment is part of the restructuring of the NSD. Her appointment was announced by John Carlin, Assistant Attorney General for National Security.
Singh will focus on strategic management issues including the design of structural changes to support work in emerging threat areas. Singh served as NSD's Acting Chief of Staff for nearly one and a half years. Earlier, she worked on cyber-related issues.

10. Malala gets US Liberty Medal
 Pakistani teenager and Noble Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai has been conferred with the Liberty Medal.
The youngest recipient of the American award said this will encourage her to continue her campaign for child rights in countries, including India.
Malala has pledged to donate the USD 100,000 award money towards education in Pakistan.
“We cannot become a generation lost. I ask all countries all around the world: Let us say no to wars. Let us say no to conflicts,” she said, adding that she is speaking up for children caught in crises in places such as as India, Syria, Nigeria and Gaza.
Previous recipients of this award include Hillary Clinton, Tony Blair, George H W Bush, Bill Clinton, Kofi Annan and Hamid Karzai.
Malala, 17, called for spending money on books, not guns in her speech. Addressing a 1400-strong audience at the National Constitution Centre in Philadelphia, she said history does not descend from the sky; it is we who make history.
