1. Winter session set to begin on Monday
 Parliament’s winter session promises to be stormy with the opposition determined to pin the Modi-led government on promises the BJP had made during its election campaign even as it will block the latter’s efforts to take forward the economic reforms agenda that many among them see as anti-people.
The government’s ambitious shortlist for this session, that starts on Monday, includes its intention to replace two ordinances -- The Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Ordinance, 2014 and The Textile Undertakings (Nationalisation) Laws (Amendment and Validation) Ordinance -- with Bills, and pass the long overdue Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill as well as The Constitution (119th Amendment) Bill, 2013, the latter to ratify the India-Bangladesh Land Agreement of 1974.
The government’s parliamentary managers have also indicated that the Goods and Services Tax Bill and amendments to the Land Acquisition Act will also come up in this session, but neither is in the shortlist. In the GST Bill’s case, the Centre has yet to resolve outstanding issues with some of the states; as far as the Land Acquisition Act is concerned, the concerned ministry has yet to finalise the amendments.

3. China’s Xi wraps up Pacific talks with Fiji aid boost
 Chinese President Xi Jinping injected a further 70 million yuan ($11.4 million) of aid money into Fiji as he wrapped up a round of talks in the Pacific nation today aimed at strengthening ties in the region.
In a stopover following the Group of 20 summit in Australia, Xi held talks with Fiji’s Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and seven other island nation leaders who form the nucleus of a 12-nation Pacific voting bloc in the United Nations.


4. FDI dips 16% to $2.45 bn in Sept
 Foreign direct investment declined by about 16 per cent to $2.45 billion in September, registering a fall for the second month in a row.
The inflows had declined by about 10 per cent to $1.27 billion in August. In September last year, the country had received foreign direct investments (FDI) worth $2.91 billion.
Foreign investments showed a growth of 15 per cent to $14.47 billion during April-September period of this fiscal compared with $12.59 billion in the same period last year, according to the latest data of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion.
Healthy inflows in May ($3.60 billion) and July ($3.50 billion) have helped in registering a positive growth during the first half of the current fiscal.
Among the top 10 sectors, telecom received the maximum FDI of $2.46 billion in the first half, followed by services ($1.22 billion), pharmaceuticals ($1.09 billion) and automobile ($1.03 billion).
During the period, India received maximum FDI from Mauritius at $4.19 billion, followed by Singapore ($2.41 billion), the Netherlands ($1.97 billion), the US ($1.19 billion), Japan ($937 million) and UK ($842 million).

5. Soon, customers can file PF withdrawal claims online
 Retirement fund body EPFO will launch a online facility for submitting provident fund withdrawal claims in December, which would quicken such settlements and benefit its over five crore subscribers.
At present, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) subscribers have to file PF settlement claims manually after they leave the job or post retirement. The online application of such claims would enable EPFO to eventually settle those within three days.
“EPFO has decided to provide the facility of online application for PF withdrawal claims. It will be launched by mid-December,” a source said.
According to the source, all those subscribers whose PF and bank accounts are linked with Aadhaar number would be able to avail themselves of this facility.

6. Ethiopia's Guye Adola wins Delhi Half Marathon
 Ethiopian runner Guye Adola demolished the course record to emerge
 triumphant in the international elite men’s category, while Florence Kiplagat led a Kenyan one-two finish in the women’s event of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon on Sunday.
Adola stopped the clock at 59.06 minutes to break the record set by countryman Atsedu Tsegay last year.
He edged past 2014 World Half Marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor, who finished the event with a timing of 59.07 minutes. Mosinet Geremew of Ethiopia was third after clocking 59:11 minutes.
In the International Elite Women category, defending champion Florence Kiplagat of Kenya won with a timing of 01:10:04 beating compatriot Gladys Cherono (01:10:05).
Ethiopian runner Worknesh Degefa finished third with a timing of 01:10:07.
Coming into the Delhi marathon, Adola had settled for bronze in 2014 World Half Marathon competition that was won by Kamworor.

7. Indian women beach kabaddi team wins gold
 Indian women’s beach kabaddi team grabbed the gold after thrashing hosts Thailand 61-28 in the final match on the concluding day, as the country finished 20th in the overall medal tally in the Asian Beach Games in Phuket on Sunday.
The Indian women led 34-13 at halftime and extended their supremacy by adding another 27 points to Thailand’s 15 in the second session to win the match easily.
The six-member Indian team was led by Mamatha with the other members being Priyanka, Randeep Kaur, Kakoli Biswas, Payel Chowdhury and Parameswari Ambalavanan.
The Indian men’s beach kabaddi team bagged a bronze after losing to Pakistan 28-39 in the semifinals, yesterday.
