1. Tendulkar named ambassador for 2015 ICC World Cup
Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar was on Monday named the ICC World Cup ambassador 
for the second successive edition.
“The International Cricket Council today announced Sachin Tendulkar as the World Cup 2015 Ambassador. It will be the second successive time that the India maestro will be the Ambassador of ICC’s pinnacle tournament, after he fulfilled the role in the previous event in 2011,” the ICC said in a statement.
In his role as ambassador, Tendulkar will promote and support a variety of ICC initiatives to enhance the profile of the tournament, which is the third biggest sporting event in the world and will take place in Australia and New Zealand from February 14 to March 29.
Tendulkar retired from international cricket last year after representing India in 200 Tests, 463 ODIs and one Twenty20 International. In a career spanning 24 years, the 41-year-old scored a total of 34,357 international runs and 100 centuries.
Tendulkar added the missing World Cup title to his long list of achievements in his sixth attempt in 2011. He is the all-time leading run-getter in World Cup history with 2,278 runs in 45 matches at an average of 56.95.

  
2. HDFC sells stake in HDFC Standard Life to Azim Premji Trust
 Housing finance giant Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd (HDFC) has okayed the sale of a minority stake in its insurance joint venture HDFC Life to Azim Premji Trust.
The sale is being effected in two tranches.
In a communication to the stock exchanges, HDFC said that that it had consented to sell up to 1,89,51,361 shares of ₹10 each of HDFC Standard Life Insurance Company Ltd (HDFC Life) to Azim Premji Trust at ₹105 per share. The shares to be sold constitute 0.95 per cent of the total issued and paid-up equity capital of HDFC Life.
HDFC said it had concluded the sale of the first tranche of 1,19,69,000 shares out of the total shares agreed to be sold. The rest of the shares covered by the proposal would be sold subsequently, the company said without specifying any specific time-frame for the sale.
Once the sale of all the 1,89,51,361 equity shares was completed, HDFC would hold 71.42 per cent of the total equity capital of HDFC Life.
In the insurance joint venture HDFC Life between HDFC and Standard Life plc of the UK, HDFC Ltd held 72.37 per cent stake and Standard Life (Mauritius Holding) Ltd held 26 per cent of the equity capital, with the balance being held by others. This was before the latest development.

3. Bimal Jalan: Commission to submit interim report on govt expenditure in Jan
 Present Government-established Expenditure Management Commission would stick to its deadline for submitting its interim report before 2015-16 Budget.
Bimal Jalan, Chairman of the Expenditure Management Commission, said here at a Calcutta Chamber of Commerce organised event on Monday that the interim report would submitted in January.
The commission Chairman also said the final report would be submitted before the 2016-17 Budget as scheduled. The NDA Government in August 2014 set up the commission for having a long-term plan for reducing the Government expenditure, particularly subsidies, to bring down fiscal deficit. The commission is to suggest ways to reform management of oil, fertilizer and food subsidies, one of the biggest drags on public expenditure of the country.
 
4. India observed National Mathematics Day to commemorate birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan
India on 22 December 2014 celebrated National Mathematics Day. The day is observed to commemorate the birth anniversary of great Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
The declaration to observe 22 December as National Mathematics Day was made by former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on 26 February 2012 at Madras University on the occasion of 125th birth anniversary of Ramanujan.
It was also declared to observe year 2012 as the National Mathematics Year.

5. Actress Billie Whitelaw of England died at age of 82
Actress Billie Whitelaw of England died in London on 21 December 2014. She was 82. She was famous for her roles as Mrs Baylock in horror film The Omen.

6. Tata Docomo customers can create their own mobile number
 Tata Docomo, the unified telecom brand of Tata Teleservices, has launched a service that allows customers to create their own mobile number.
The company in a statement said customers can walk into any Tata Docomo brand stores and create a number based on their preference like birth dates, favourite numbers or anything simple to remember.
“With this new service, we’ve made it possible for our customers to create personalised phone numbers. This is an industry first and we are very excited about bringing this service to our existing and new subscribers,” Tata Teleservices Head (Branded Retail and Strategic Distribution) Sandeep Singal said.
The company said, according to research, nearly three-fourth of consumers desire personalised products and services, and personalisation is the most influential factor in determining value for money.
It added a recent survey found that customers are willing to pay 20 per cent more than standard equivalents for customised products.

7. India won Men and Women title of Kabaddi World Cup 2014
India  won the Men and Women title of Kabaddi World Cup 2014. This was the fifth Kabaddi World Cup.
In Men, India defeated Pakistan while in women, India defeated New Zealand to win the title for the fourth consecutive time.
The final match of the cup was played at Guru Gobind Singh Multipurpose Stadium in Jalandhar, Punjab, India.

8. Surat Municipal Corporation partnered with Microsoft to transform Surat into smart city
The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) announced that it had partnered with Microsoft India to transform Surat into a smart city.
The city will be transformed into a smart city under Microsoft’s CityNext Program, a plan that will make citizen services more responsive, transparent, efficient and productive. 
Under the partnership, Microsoft and its partners will help SMC to bring solutions for water management and urban planning, including building plan approvals.
 
9. BHEL bagged 16.96 million euro contract in Turkey for a thermal power project
harat Heavy Electricals (BHEL)  bagged a 16.96 million Euro (approximately 130.8 crore rupees) contract for a thermal power project in Turkey. This is BHEL’s maiden entry in the Turkish Power Market.
The contract was placed by Electricity Generation Company (EUAS) which is the largest electric power company in Turkey and it aims at reducing the emission levels drastically.
Details of the Contract
BHEL needs to rehabilitate 3 units of Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs) for the 430 MW Tuncbilek Thermal Power Project in Turkey on EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction) basis.

10. Losar, the New Year festival of Ladakh region, began
Losar, the Buddhists festival of Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, started on 22 December 2014. The festival marks the beginning of New Year in Ladakh.
