1. Rajiv Mehta appointed new DGP of Meghalaya
Senior IPS officer Rajiv Mehta has been appointed as the new Director General of Police in Meghalaya.
The State government has issued a notification for the appointment of Mehta as DGP last evening, Chief Secretary P.B.O. Warjri said on Friday.
Currently serving as the Director General of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Delhi, the 1981 Assam-Meghalaya IPS cadre will join office in about 10 days time, he said.
Mr. Mehta replaces P.J.P. Hanaman who retired on December 31 and will take charge from acting DGP S.K. Jain.
2. Vistara airline started domestic flight operation in India
Vistara airline, a joint venture of Tata-SIA, started its flight operation in India on 9 January 2015. Vistara flight took off with its first flight from Delhi to Mumbai.
Vistara will be the third full-service carrier in India, after state-run Air India and private carrier Jet Airways.
In December 2014, Vistara announced the launch of its operation from 9 January 2015 with flight from Delhi to Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
At present, Vistara has two leased A320s and will operate 148-seater Airbus A320-200 with 16 seats in business class, 36 in premium economy and 96 in economy on Delhi to Mumbai and Ahmedabad routes.
Further, Vistara airline will operate flights from Delhi to Goa, Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Srinagar, Jammu and Patna in the first year.
The airlines also plan to operate 87 flights in the first year, with five leased Airbus A-320s. Later the airline plans up to 301 flights by the fourth year with a fleet of A320s.
3. RBI: PSBs have to work out their own capital raising options
The Centre bringing down its stake in public sector banks (PSBs) to 52 per cent is not sufficient to meet their capital needs.
And, PSBs need to work out their own capital raising options over the next five years, R Gandhi, Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India, said here on Saturday.
With Basel-III norms in place, Indian PSBs are expected to need Rs. 4.50 lakh crore, with Rs. 2.40 lakh crore as equity capital.
The Basel-III capital framework has been implemented in the country from April 1, 2013.
According to Gandhi, the projections are made on the basis of minimum requirements and hence are not necessarily sufficient to meet capital needs.
The Centre has already infused nearly Rs. 58,600 crore in PSBs over the last four years and will provide around Rs. 11,200 crore this fiscal.
Charting out capital requirement plans could include options such as non-voting rights share capital and differential voting rights share capital, among others.

India survived a batting collapse in a nervous final session to force a draw
in the fourth test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, leaving the hosts 2-0 winners of the series.

Appointment Committee of the Cabinet has appointed senior bureaucrat Sindhushree Khullar as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NITI Aayog.
She will serve in the post for one year starting from 1st January.
She is 1975-batch officer of the Indian Administrative Service’s (IAS) Union Territories cadre. She had retired for service in March 2013. Earlier, she was member-secretary of Planning Commission.

Prominent Chinese theoretical physicist Yu Min has been awarded State Preeminent Science and Technology Award for 2014.
Chinese President Xi Jinping gave him the award in the ceremony held at Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
He was awarded for his groundbreaking research which led to the development of China’s first hydrogen bomb in 1967. It was tested after China’s first successful atomic weapons test. He is famously known as China’s ‘Father of Hydrogen bomb’.

Pravasi Bharatiya Samman 2015 has been awarded to 15 prominent non-resident Indians (NRI’s) on the concluding day of 13th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas.

8. Maithiripala Sirisena sworn-in as 7th President of Sri Lanka
allewatte Gamaralalage Maithripala Yapa Sirisena (Maithiripala Sirisena) was on 9 January 2015 sworn-in as the 7th President of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court Judge K Sri Pawan administered the oath of office to Maithiripala Sirisena at a oath taking ceremony held at the Independence Square in Colombo.
Before the swearing-in ceremony of President Maithripala Sirisena, the leader of the United National Party (UNP) Ranil Wickramasinghe took the oath as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
Maithripala heads a rainbow coalition of several parties including United National Party and the Buddhist Monk party.

Presidential rule was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir (J &K) on 9 January 2015. President Pranab Mukherjee approved the recommendation of the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir N N Vohra.
Governor N N Vohra had recommended for President Rule in light of deadlock over the formation of the new government continued in J & K.
The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election were held in five phases in December 2014. In the Assembly election, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won 28 seats, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 25 and National Congress (NC) won 15 seats.
The political parties failed to form government after no party was able to muster the majority of 87 seats required to form the government. Even the attempts of PDP and BJP to cobble up a coalition did not fructify.

10. NASA, Nissan to develop self driving cars
The US space agency and the automaker Nissan have announced a five-year partnership to build self-driving, zero-emission autonomous cars for earth- and eventually space.
Nissan and NASA will test autonomous cars at the US space agency’s Ames Research Centre in Sunnyvale, California.
NASA researchers will be working with Nissan’s research unit in Silicon Valley, they said in a joint statement.
