5. India, U.S. sign three MoUs on smart cities
India and United States (US) have signed three Memoranda of Understandings (MoUs) on smart cities.
These MoUs were signed by the representatives of United States Trade and Development Agency (USTAD) and the respective Chief Secretaries of State Governments of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh in the presence of Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu.
These MoU’s seeks to give a boost to Union governments flagship smart cities scheme, by building smart cities in
Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh.
US will help each respective state to conduct feasibility studies, finding investors, ways to use the best technology and formulating the plan for building three smart cities.
While, respective state Governments will provide resources like technical information and data related to smart cities planning; staff, logistical and travel support and budgetary resources.
6. India funds Nepal’s Pancheshwar project to counter Kheri floods
India will provide fund of Rs 1500 crore to Nepal’s Pancheshwar multi-purpose project on Mahakali river for countering the Kheri floods in Uttar Pradesh.
This move of Union government comes after a delegation of MPs visited Nepal and had submitted their report to government.

It is located at Narayan Ghat of Dharchula on Mahakali River( also known as Kali Ganga in Uttarakhand ) in Nepal. The height of dam is the 315 meters.
After completion dam will be the second largest dam in the world with a capacity of 6720 Mega Watt (MW) power production.
In case of power sharing, India has reached into an agreement with Nepal to procure additional electricity produced by project.
This project will regulate and control the free flow of Karnali and Mohana rivers which cause floods in Kheri, Pilibhit of Uttar Pradesh and other Terai districts of northern India.

“The traditional Indian dress was prepared by three classic weavers and dispatched for New Delhi yesterday from here,” said local businessman Abdul Matin, whose family has been in handloom weaving business for last three generations.
Michelle is accompanying her husband and U.S. President Barack Obama, who is in New Delhi to be a part of Republic Day function as the Chief Guest.
Keeping in mind Michelle’s fascination for Banarasi silk, Matin said the order for this saree was placed with him by Debbie Driesman, the wife of Indian-American Frank Islam, a trusted man of the U.S. President.

10. Corporation Bank to raise Rs. 500 cr from Tier 1 bonds
State-owned Corporation Bank has launched an issue of Tier I bonds to raise Rs. 500 crore for funding its growth plans.
The fund would be raised from unsecured subordinated Additional Tier I Basel III compliant non-convertible taxable bonds, a senior official of the bank said.
Under the Basel-III norms, AT-1 bonds come with loss absorbency features, meaning that in case of stress, banks can write off such investments or convert them into common equity if approved by the RBI.
The bond issue, which opened on January 20, carries a coupon rate of 9.51 per cent and has a face value of Rs. 10 lakh.
The issue would close on February 5 and bonds would be issued on February 6.
AT-1 bonds, which qualify as core or equity capital, are one of the means of raising capital by public sector banks that require Rs. 2.40 lakh crore by March 2019 to meet global norms on capital adequacy (Basel III).
The bonds would be listed on the National Stock Exchange.
Meanwhile, the bank has bagged the MSME Banking Excellence Awards. It has bagged two awards under the categories ‘Best MSME Bank Award for Other Bank (Winner)’ and ‘Best Bank Award (Runner Up)’
The award was received by S R Bansal, Chairman and Managing Director, from Kalraj Mishra, Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises Minister.
State-owned Corporation Bank has launched an issue of Tier I bonds to raise Rs. 500 crore for funding its growth plans.
The fund would be raised from unsecured subordinated Additional Tier I Basel III compliant non-convertible taxable bonds, a senior official of the bank said.
Under the Basel-III norms, AT-1 bonds come with loss absorbency features, meaning that in case of stress, banks can write off such investments or convert them into common equity if approved by the RBI.
The bond issue, which opened on January 20, carries a coupon rate of 9.51 per cent and has a face value of Rs. 10 lakh.
The issue would close on February 5 and bonds would be issued on February 6.
AT-1 bonds, which qualify as core or equity capital, are one of the means of raising capital by public sector banks that require Rs. 2.40 lakh crore by March 2019 to meet global norms on capital adequacy (Basel III).
The bonds would be listed on the National Stock Exchange.

Overseas investors have pumped in a staggering over Rs 21,000 crore in Indian capital markets since the beginning of the month owing to easing inflation and rate cut by Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have bought shares worth Rs 5,992 crore (USD 977 million) till January 23, while bought debt worth 15,336 crore (USD 2.5 billion) taking the
total investment to Rs 21,328 crore (USD 3.45 billion), latest data with Central Depository Services Ltd (CDSL) showed.
These investors got re-christened as FPIs or Foreign Portfolio Investors last year under a new regulatory regime that promises to make it easier for them to invest in India.
Market analysts attributed the huge inflow to low inflation levels and rate cut by RBI. The central bank on January 14 surprised market participants with a 25 basis point rate cut.

Overseas investors have pumped in a staggering over Rs 21,000 crore in Indian capital markets since the beginning of the month owing to easing inflation and rate cut by Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have bought shares worth Rs 5,992 crore (USD 977 million) till January 23, while bought debt worth 15,336 crore (USD 2.5 billion) taking the
total investment to Rs 21,328 crore (USD 3.45 billion), latest data with Central Depository Services Ltd (CDSL) showed.
These investors got re-christened as FPIs or Foreign Portfolio Investors last year under a new regulatory regime that promises to make it easier for them to invest in India.
Market analysts attributed the huge inflow to low inflation levels and rate cut by RBI. The central bank on January 14 surprised market participants with a 25 basis point rate cut.

12. Parupalli Kashyap Wins Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold Title 2015
India’s Parupalli Kashyap has won $120,000 Syed Modi India Grand Prix Gold badminton title 2015.
In the final match he defeated Kidambi Srikanth to win the men’s singles title held at the Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
Kashyap won the final match by score of 23-21, 23-21.

It is named after a famous Indian badminton player Syed Modi, an eight-time National Badminton champion.
After his death, a badminton tournament was constituted in his memory, Syed Modi Memorial and All India Syed Modi badminton championship hosted each year at Lucknow.
13. Saina Nehwal wins Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament 2015
Indian ace shuttler Saina Nehwal has clinched the Syed Modi International India Grand Prix Gold badminton title 2015 in the women’s singles category.
In the final match she defeated world champion Carolina Marin (Spain) by score of 19-21, 25-23, 21-16 held at Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
With this win she has retained this title which she had won in 2014
