1. Eminent singer Shekhar Sen appointed as Chairman of Sangeet Natak Akademi
Eminent singer, composer, lyricist and actor Shekhar Sen has been appointed as the
chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA).
His appointment was announced by Union Ministry of Culture and will have term five years with immediate effect.
This post was vacant since September 2014, after then Chairman Leela Samson had resigned.


2. Shirani Bandaranayake reinstated as Chief Justice of Sri Lanka
Shirani Bandaranayake, the former Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, was reinstated  by Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on a special cabinet approval.
With the reinstatement of Bandaranayake, the appointment of Mohan Peiris as Chief Justice of Sri Lanka by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was cancelled and termed as illegal appointment.
The appointment of Peiris was termed illegal because, according to President’s office, the Rajapaksa government had not followed the proper constitutional procedure. Peiris was appointed as successor of Bandaranayake.
Earlier, Bandarnayake, the 43rd Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, was impeached and removed by the Parliament of Sri Lanka during the regime of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa in January 2013.

3. GNLF founder Subhash Ghisingh passes away
Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) founder Subhash Ghisingh has passed away in New Delhi. He was 78.
He had spearheaded the Gorkhaland movement in the 1980s for a separate state for ethnic Gorkha people living in Darjeeling district of West Bengal.

4. RBI welcomes `differentiated banking’ partnerships
Welcoming the tie-up between country’s largest mobile telephony player Bharati Airtel and Kotak Mahindra Bank for a payments bank, Reserve Bank of India deputy governor H R Khan has said such partnerships are crucial for the success of differentiated banks.
“If they have cost effective framework, use mobile and telco network, then they (small finance banks and payments banks) can be successful, otherwise the space is becoming rather overcrowded (with commercial banks),” Khan said, addressing an event organised by ETNow last evening.
The deputy governor also welcomed the deal between Airtel and KMB, saying the RBI has been pushing for such tie-ups for long.
With speculation that a host of telcos, including the state-run BSNL, Vodafone and Telenor are interested in entering the differentiated banking fray, Khan also hinted that more such tie-ups might be in the works.
The RBI kick-started the process of `differentiated banking’ with the release of the final guidelines for small finance banks and payments banks. The last day for applying for interested parties has been extended till February 2 and the RBI has promised to eventually grant licenses “on tap.”
The Payment Banks are aimed at encouraging savings and help with the remittances, while the Small Finance Banks will be small-ticket lending in a smaller area of operation.

5. International Paper APPM bags IPMA environment award
International Paper APPM Ltd has received IPMA Environment Award for the year 2013-2014. This award is constituted by Indian Paper Manufacturers Association (IPMA), an industry body representing the resurgent and organised face of pulp and paper sector in India.
Presented once in 2 years, the award evokes considerable interest and encourages healthy competition within the industry. This award was presented to IP-APPM’s Rajahmundry mill for maintaining high standard of environment management.
Rampraveen Swaminathan, President, International Paper-India and Chairman and Managing Director– IP-APPM said, “It endorses the strong environmental and ethical practices that International Paper follows across its global operations. The testimony to this is the fact that out of the 6 times, this is the 3rd time that IP-APPM has received this award from IPMA.”

6. IndusInd Bank, Chelsea Club launch co-branded credit card
Mid-sized private lender IndusInd Bank has partnered Chelsea Football Club to launch a co-branded credit card for football fans.
“In recent times, football has seen a surge in viewership in the Indian sub-continent, with Chelsea having a large fan base in India...With this card, the bank has strengthened the Chelsea affinity through two specially designed card designs, while further driving the football fans’ connect with the club through offers, tie-ups and discounts on merchandise and collectibles on Chelsea’s official online megastore. From time to time, basis eligibility, the customers would also be entitled for hospitality packages, which include tickets for Chelsea home matches,” IndusInd Bank said in a statement.
The card provides attractive offers on dining, entertainment, personal grooming, travel and rewards proposition depending on the spending pattern of the customers.

7. Microsoft launches Outlook for rival iOS, Android
Microsoft today launched an Outlook app for rival handsets running on Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, ramping up its software services efforts.
The move will allow users of iPhones, iPads and Android-powered smartphones and tablets to more easily access the email service popular with many businesses.
“The new Outlook app brings together the core tools you need to get things done —— your email, calendar, contacts and files —— helping you get more done even on the smallest screen,” Microsoft said on its Outlook blog.
Microsoft under new chief executive Satya Nadella has been making moves to adapt to the new mobile landscape, with fewer customers using traditional PCs.
But with the Windows platform lagging in mobile, Microsoft has begun offering its software for rival operating systems.
In November, it said it was making its Office software suite available free for iOS and Android.
The new Outlook app offers new features for mobile users, including a way to sort and filter important emails.
It offers a “focused inbox” which learns “about you and gets even more tailored to your priorities,” the blog said.
The move comes a day after US online giant Amazon announced plans to offer a cloud-based email and calendar service to directly compete with Microsoft Outlook and others

8. Zhelyu Zhelev, Bulgaria’s first democratically elected President, dies
Zhelyu Zhelev, a philosopher and communist-era dissident, who became Bulgaria’s first democratically elected President in 1990, died on Friday, his family said. He was 79.
Zhelev was the founder and first leader of the pro-democracy Union of Democratic Forces after the demise of the country’s Stalinist regime in 1989. He served as President until 1997.

9. ICC lifted the five-year ban imposed on Pakistan’s fast bowler Mohammad Amir 
International Cricket Council (ICC) on 29 January 2015 lifted the five-year ban imposed on Pakistan’s fast bowler Mohammad Amir. With this, Amir can now play in domestic cricket under the auspices of the Pakistan Cricket Board with immediate effect.  
This decision to lift the five-year ban, which was due to end on 2 September 2015, was taken during two-day board meeting of ICC in Dubai.
The decision to lift the ban was taken after Sir Ronnie Flanagan, the Chairman of Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) exercised his discretion to allow Mohammad Amir to return to domestic cricket.
