1. Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe appointed as Chairman of African Union
Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has been appointed as Chairman of African Union (AU). He will be 13th Chairman of African Union (AU) and succeed Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz for a one-year term. The position of chairman of the AU is a rotating one on yearly basis and largely ceremonial.

2. Senior IPS officer Krishna Chaudhary appointed as new ITBP DG
Senior IPS officer Krishna Chaudhary has been appointed the new Director General (DG) of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). His name was announced by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will be in office till June 2017. Krishna Chaudhary is 1979-batch Bihar cadre officer. Before this appointment he was working as the Director General of the Railway Protection Force.

3. First Canister-based Agni-V missile successfully test-fired
For the first time, a canisterised version of Agni-V missile was successfully test-fired on 31 January 2015 from Wheeler Island off Odisha coast. This was the third successful flight test of the Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) and the first canister trial.
Test: The missile was launched from sealed canister, mounted on a TATRA truck. It was carrying dummy payload. Test showed that dummy payload withstand temperatures more than 3,0000 C and hit the target at pre-designated point in the Indian Ocean.
Implication: A canister-launch system of Agni-V missile will give the forces the requisite operational flexibility to swiftly transport the ballistic missile and launch it from a place of their choosing.

4. Budhiraja is Amway India GM
Global direct selling major Amway has elevated Anshu Budhraja (44) as General Manager, Amway India. Budhraja joined Amway in 1998 and served the company in various capacities across departments, including finance, IT and regional operations, before he was posted as Chief Operating Officer in 2013. A company release said Anshu takes over from Bill Pinckney (66), who has been at the helm of Amway India for the past 15 years. Pinckney will step back from the day-to-day running of the organisation. He will, however, continue to play a mentoring and coaching role in Amway India as Resident Director.

5. UAE Exchange launches multi-currency pre-paid travel card
 UAE Exchange India has launched ‘Go Cash’, a multi-currency pre-paid travel card that can be used at ATMs/POS and for online purchase across the globe.
“‘Go Cash’ card enables exchange rate lock facility, security and accessibility at minimum time with worldwide acceptance for purchases across millions of Master Card-approved outlets. Travel card acts as a safety machine and customers can be free from the fear of cash carrying enigma,” UAE Exchange said in a statement.

6. RBI constitutes high level panel on urban cooperative banks (UCB)
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has constituted a high-powered panel on urban cooperative banks (UCB).
It will be headed by RBI Deputy Governor R Gandhi and comprise of eight member who will be experienced bankers. They will submit its report within three months from the date of its first meeting.
This high-powered panel will re-examine and recommend appropriate set of businesses, size, conversion and licensing terms for the UCB sector.
The Terms of Reference of the high level panel are:
Businesses: Examine the line of businesses that UCBs may be permitted to undertake and their benchmark in terms of size of business, capital requirement, regulatory regime etc.
Size of UCB: Suggest the appropriate size up to which a UCB may be able to grow without undue risk to the system.
Conversion Criteria & licensing terms : Suggest the criteria for allowing voluntary conversion by a UCB and examine whether the time is opportune to give license to new UCBs.
Determine the modalities of implementing the suggestion of the Malegam Committee. Especially, whether the 50 per cent in value of deposits should be held by voting members. Thus, propose a feasible structure that puts majority voting in the hands of contributors of funds in UCB.

7.Serena Williams beats Sharapova to win Australian Open title

Top seed Serena Williams fought off a barking cough to clinch her 19th grand slam singles title with a 6-3 7-6(5) victory over Maria Sharapova in the Australian Open final on Saturday. Williams's sixth title at Melbourne Park moved her into a tie with fellow American Helen Wills Moody in third on the all-time list after she joined Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert on 18 at last year's U.S. Open. Only Australia's Margaret Court (24) and Germany's Steffi Graf (22), who holds the record for the Open era, have more grand slam singles titles than the 33-year-old American.

8. Central Bank of India opens forex hub in Vadodara
The first forex hub of the Mumbai-headquartered Central Bank of India in Gujarat was opened at Urmi Char Rasta here to provide prompt and efficient services to importers and exporters.
Ramesh Singh, General Manager, Treasury & International division, Central Bank of India, inaugurated the forex hub here yesterday. Speaking on the occasion, Singh said it is the bank’s first forex hub in Gujarat. It had earlier opened a forex hub in Mumbai in August last year.The bank plans to open a forex hub in Delhi by March and in Kolkata and Chennai later this year.At present, Central Bank of India has overseas offices at Nairobi, Hong Kong and a joint venture with Bank of India, Bank of Baroda and the Zambian government. Recently, it also opened a representative office at Nairobi, Kenya,

9. Suvarna Raju is new Chairman of HAL
T Suvarna Raju has taken charge as Chairman, HAL. Raju, known for speeding up the company’s patent filing, has taken over the reins from Dr R K Tyagi. “Given the high expectation built around the company, my priorities would be to concentrate on operational excellence, and build the company as a technology powerhouse,” he said. He said he wanted HAL to stand out as an example of the Government’s ‘Make-in-India’ endeavour, even while admitting that it would be a challenging task to achieve in the field of aviation.
Born in the village of P Vemavaram of Tanuku (West Godavari) district in Andhra Pradesh, Raju, an engineering graduate, joined HAL on June 26, 1980, as a Management Trainee.
