Even as payment banks seek to enter the banking industry, the country's largest private lender ICICI Bank has launched its digital product 'Pockets' to allow any individual to instantly make transactions on a mobile phone with or without a bank account.
Calling it a digital bank, ICICI Bank said users can fund the e-wallet from any bank account through a debit card or Net banking account and start transacting immediately on a mobile without any documentation.
Users can send money to any e-mail ID, mobile number, Facebook friends, and bank account. It also allows one to send bills, recharge mobiles, book movie tickets, order food, gifts and share expenses through the e-wallet, said Chanda Kochhar, MD of CEO of ICICI Bank.
Unlike State Bank of India (which has tied up with Reliance) and Kotak Mahindra Bank (tie-up with Bharti Airtel), ICICI Bank has not partnered any firm in applying for a payment bank licence. However, Kochhar said, "We are always open to looking at partnerships and tie-ups."
The maximum limit on the e-wallet is Rs. 10,000, while any amount over and above that requires the user to link the wallet to any bank account or open an ICICI Bank account within 24 hours.
The bank also plans to allow loan facility on this product.
