1. PM flags off train service at Talaimannar
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today flagged off a train service at the north-western Sri Lankan town of Talaimannar — the closest point to India — restored after decades of civil war, completing the reconstruction of the entire Northern Province Railway Line.
Accompanied by Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, Modi also unveiled a plaque inaugurating Talaimannar 1650 Pier Railway station.
Modi flew in here by an IAF chopper from the ancient holy town of Anuradhapura where he offered prayers at the sacred Mahabodhi tree. He is on his way to Jaffna, a former war zone in the island’s Tamil-majority Northern Province.
The newly-constructed 63-km-long railway track between Madhu Road and Talaimannar Pier is the last segment of the 265-km-long, Northern Railway Line Reconstruction Project which is being executed by IRCON International Ltd, a Government of India owned company. It is designed with a speed potential of 120 km per hour.
2. Mary Kom to be brand ambassador of Northeast
Olympic medal winning boxer MC Mary Kom is being appointed as the brand ambassador of the Northeast to showcase the potential of the region which offers ₹2.4 trillion business opportunities across various sectors. An official announcement in this regard would me made soon, Minister of State in the Ministry of Development of North East Region (DoNER) Jitendra Singh said.
“We are going to have a brand ambassador for Northeast.
“So, after a lot of deliberations we have zeroed in on the name of MC Mary Kom as the brand ambassador. We will make a formal announcement in a couple of days from now when she is in Delhi,” Singh said while addressing the 10th North East Business Summit here.
The two-day Summit “Development through partnership with ASEAN and BIMSTEC Countries” was organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce here

3. UTI MF to launch 2nd offshore equity fund in Dublin
UTI Mutual Fund is set to launch a second offshore equity fund to raise $300 million in Dublin next month, shortly after mopping up $300 million through a similar fund last year which tapped vast European investments.
“We are launching offshore equity fund in Dublin to raise $300 million. The approval process is going on and it would likely be launched in April,” Leo Puri, managing director of UTI, told PTI at the ‘Emerging India Forum 2015’ organised by an Indian media house in Singapore.
“We see a potential to get $1 billion,” he said when asked about the scope of raising funds to support investments in India.
UTI Mutual Fund has already raised $300 million through a similar fund launched in Dublin in December 2014, which tapped the vast European investments.

4. Charan Singh assumes charge as UCO Bank ED
UCO Bank has announced that Charan Singh (54) has assumed the charge of Executive Director of the bank from March 10. Prior to this, he was General Mangager, Bank of India, in charge of its human resources department. He also held the post of Chairman of Aryavart Gramin Bank during his 32-year long tenure in Bank of India

5. TCS appoints Aarthi Subramanian to board of directors
Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS), India’s largest software services exporter, said on Thursday that it has appointed Aarthi Subramanian as an executive director on the board of directors of the company for a period of three years. With this appointment, the total strength of the board of directors increases to 11 directors, which include six independent directors. Subramanian is the global head of the delivery excellence group responsible for governance of service delivery, compliance and risk management.

6. Japan, France sign defence pact to spur cooperation, joint development
Japan and France signed a deal on military equipment and technology transfers on Friday, in a move to drive cooperation and joint development of defence gear, as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe strengthens security ties with major powers.
Japan, at odds with China on territorial and other issues, has reached similar deals with Britain and Australia over the past two years, while ending a ban on its military fighting abroad and easing restrictions on weapons exports.
The agreement encourages bilateral defence cooperation by ensuring that transferred technology and equipment will not be provided to a third country without the consent of the country of origin.

7. Dr. Alka Beotra nominated Member of the Executive Board of WAADS 
Dr. Alka Beotra, Scientific Director, National Dope Testing Laboratory, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, has been nominated to the Executive Board of WAADS (World Association of Anti Doping Scientists). Her tenure on the Executive Board of WAADS will be for a period of three years, i.e. from March 2015

8. Veteran fantasy author Sir Terence David John Pratchett passed away
Renowned fantasy author Sir Terence David John Pratchett (Terry Pratchett) passed away  in London, United Kingdom following a prolonged illness. He was 66.Sir Terry Pratchett was famously known as the creator of the Discworld series of more than 40 interconnected comic novels. His first Discworld novel The Colour of Magic was published in 1983. Pratchett has sold more than 85 million books worldwide in 37 languages.

• In a career spanning 44 years, Pratchett had written more than 70 books which were translated in 37 languages.
• His debut novel The Carpet People was published in 1971 and his first Discworld novel The Colour of Magic was published in 1983.

9. Mumbai HC directed Maharashtra Government to set up a redressal mechanism against noise pollution
The Mumbai High Court (HC)  directed the Maharashtra government to set up a redressal mechanism for complaints filed by citizens against noise pollution levels.
The direction given by the Mumbai HC is the latest in the series of rules and judgments pertaining to noise pollution given by various courts and the Union Government respectively.
It also directed the state government to frame a policy in this regard within two months and submit a compliance report by 6 June 2015. Further it directed the state government to take prompt action before the festivals get over.The court further said that organizers of the religious festivals do not have the right to take away the fundamental right of citizen to silence and to live in peace and comfort. Right to live peacefully is enshrined in the Article 21 of the Constitution of India.
