 1. Modi thanks France as he wraps up visit
 
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today thanked France and wrapped up
 his first visit here that saw the two nations elevate their strategic ties to a new level as they agreed on a deal for 36 Rafale fighter jets and decided to move ahead with the log-jammed Jaitapur nuclear project.
“Thank you France! Substantial ground was covered during my visit. Thankful to French Govt & people. Will always cherish the enthusiasm,” Modi tweeted in both English and French while leaving Paris for Germany.
With ‘Make—in—India’ being the theme, the two sides signed about 20 pacts, covering areas like civil nuclear energy, urban development, railways and space.
During the three-day stay here, France pledged 2 billion euros for sustainable development in India as the Prime Minister invited investments and technology from this country.
Modi also visited the manufacturing facility of aircraft manufacturer Airbus which announced its decision to enhance outsourcing in India from 400 million Euros to 2 billion Euros over the next five years.
It also expressed keen interest in manufacturing in India by participating in the ‘Make—in—India’ programme.
Modi and Hollande, who held detailed discussions on the entire gamut of bilateral relations, pledged to push two—day investments and trade.
After his talks with Hollande, the Prime Minister said he was confident that the strategic partnership will go to a new height.
The Indian decision to buy 36 Rafale fighter aircraft in fly-way condition “as quickly as possible” marks bypassing of the log-jammed deal for supply of 126 aircraft.
For this, an inter-governmental agreement will be signed under “separate terms and conditions” which will be discussed by officials.
France was the first destination of Modi’s three—nation tour that will take him to Germany and Canada as well.
The Prime Minister left Paris for Hannover where India is a partner country in its international fair.


2. SEBI moves US court with $12 mn claim on Sahara jet sale
In a new twist to the high profile SEBI-Sahara case, the Indian capital markets regulator has approached a US court with a USD 12-million claim on proceeds from sale of a corporate jet owned by a Sahara Group firm.
The court has rejected the demand for now, saying that SEBI could not “properly file a claim prior to the Bar Date and in accordance with the terms of the Court’s order“.
The Indianapolis court is looking into disbursement of money collected from the aircraft sale that was triggered by a litigation. It ruled however that the court-appointed receiver can initiate wire transfers from the escrow account to SEBI-Sahara Refund Account after being satisfied with the validity of the demands.
This bank account was created after a Supreme Court order in August 2012 for refund to bondholders of two Sahara group firms, which were asked to submit over Rs. 24,000 crore with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) for making repayments to investors.
While Sahara claims to have already made over 95 per cent of repayments directly, this has been disputed by SEBI and the group chief Subrata Roy has been in jail for more than a year.

3. Lewis Hamilton wins Chinese Grand Prix of Formula One

Mercedes Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton from Britain on 12 April 2015 won Chinese Grand Prix of Formula One on the Shanghai International Circuit in China. This was his second win of the season and his fourth Chinese Grand Prix win. It was also Lewis Hamilton’s overall 35th Grand Prix win. In Chinese Grand Prix, Hamilton was followed by teammate Nico Rosberg at second place.

4. PNB opens 121 ATMs in one day

 State-owned Punjab National Bank on Sunday opened 121 ATMs across the country to commemorate its 121th foundation day.
With this, its ATM network has grown to 6,421, the bank said in a statement.
Besides, the bank also opened 121 Offsite E-Lobbys taking such number of kiosk to 621.
On the occasion, the bank also started selling Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, the special saving scheme of the government for the girl child. It is available across designated 1,604 branches of the bank. The rate of interest on Sukanya Samriddhi Account was recently increased to 9.2 per cent.
Besides, Electronic Pension payment Order(e PPO) project for Indian railway and PPF business through internet banking were launched by the bank MD Gauri Shankar.
The bank was established on April 12, 1895 in Lohore Pakistan by freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai.

5. Air Pegasus Begins Commercial Operations
Air Pegasus, promoted by Decor Aviation Private Limited, on Sunday commenced its commercial operation with a daily to-and-fro flight to Hubballi and Thiruvananthapuram from here.
"Commercial operation with daily flight to Hubballi and Thiruvananthapuram from Bengaluru has commenced from today," Air Pegasus managing director Shyson Thomas told reporters here.
The company plans to have five ATR aircraft in South India by December and would increase it to 20. "We plan to have five ATRs in Southern region of the country and will increase it to twenty," Mr Thomas said.
"Connecting to the country's IT capital, the newly launched flights will boost the economies of these two towns, by simplifying the travel options for both in-bound and out-bound passengers," he said.
Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju launched the operations of Air Pegasus.
Decor Aviation, which is part of the Decor Group of Companies, will provide ground handling services to Indian and foreign carriers across eleven airports in India, Mr Thomas said.
Based out of the Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore, Air Pegasus will subsequently scale up its services gradually to connect Kochi, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Belagavi, Rajahmundry, Puducherry and Madurai, Mr Thomas said. Decor Aviation, which is part of the Decor Group of Companies, provides ground handling services to Indian and foreign carriers across 11 airports in India.

6. NITI Aayog begins mid-term appraisal of 12th Five Year Plan
 The NITI Aayog has initiated the mid-term appraisal process of the 12th Five Year Plan, an exercise which has long been followed prior to establishment of the new body that replaced the Planning Commission.
Completing its 100 days, the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog today said the last three months have been “tremendous” in the role of its inception as a think thank of the government.
“NITI Aayog has initiated the process of undertaking the mid-term appraisal of the 12th Plan. This opportunity is also being used to weave in the national development agenda discussed in the meeting of the Governing Council for its suitable implementation in the remaining two years of the 12th Plan,” it said in a release. The 12th Plan ends in March 2017.
The erstwhile 50 years old Planning Commission of the socialist era was replaced by NITI Aayog earlier this year.
Its role is to act as a think-thank to the government with noted economist Arvind Panagariya as its vice chairman.
NITI has the role to work with the Centre to forge a model of cooperative federalism, whereby the Centre and states forming Team India can come together to chart a common course for progress and prosperity, said the release.

7. Asteroid named after Malala
The youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner and girls’ education campaigner Malala Yousafzai now has an asteroid named after her, media reported.
Amy Mainzer, astronomer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, named Asteroid 316201 after Malala, Dawn online reported Friday.
He said, “It is a great honour to be able to name an asteroid after Malala. My postdoctoral fellow Dr. Carrie Nugent brought to my attention the fact that although many asteroids have been named, very few have been named to honor the contributions of women (and particularly women of color).”
Mr. Mainzer discovered the asteroid in the Main Belt between Mars and Jupiter which gives her the right to name it. It orbits the Sun every 5.5 years.

8. Foreign fund inflows cross Rs. 81,000 cr so far in 2015
 With overseas investors pumping in over Rs. 2,000 crore in the Indian capital markets so far this month, total foreign fund inflows have crossed the Rs. 81,000 crore mark since the beginning of the year.
Analysts expect the inflows to accelerate further going ahead, helped by clearance of reform bills for insurance, coal and mining, as also on assurances on controversial issues like General Anti Avoidance Rules (GAAR).
Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) have bought shares worth Rs. 2,392 crore till April 10 this month, while they pulled out Rs. 337 crore from the debt markets, taking their net investment to Rs. 2,054 crore (USD 329 million), as per the data compiled by Central Depository Services Ltd.
This has taken their total net investment in the country’s capital markets (equity and debt segments) so far in 2015 to Rs. 81,030 crore (about USD 13 billion).
Market participants attributed the robust inflows to positive investor sentiment driven by several reform measures announcement by the government.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced a slew of measures to attract overseas investment in the country in his Budget for 2015-16.
