1. Union Government appoints M J Joseph as Controller General of Accounts
Union Ministry of Finance has appointed M J Joseph as the Controller General of Accounts (CGA). He will succeed Jawahar Thakur, who was recently appointed as OSD (Accounting Reforms) in the office of CGA.
Joseph is a 1979 batch Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) officer. Prior to this appointment he was Director General (DG) of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
He also had served in various administrative capacities in Union Government including Additional Secretary in Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Joint Secretary and Financial Advisor in the President Secretariat and Director in Defence Ministry.
Joseph also had worked with the International Monitory Fund (IMF) as a Public Financial Management Adviser in Tanzania.

Settling the differences over the long pending 660 MW Kishau dam project, the Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh officials, on Saturday, agreed upon sharing of benefits from the project equally.
In the meeting held in Dehradun on Saturday, officials from both the States discussed on the final draft of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The draft of the MoU will now be sent for the approval of the respective Cabinets of both the governments.
There were differences between the two governments over sharing of the benefits from the project. On Saturday, it was agreed upon that the two governments would get equal share of benefits from the project.
The issues over the cost of the project were settled earlier with the Centre agreeing to bear 90 percent cost of the project and the two States deciding to bear five percent each of the remaining cost.
The project, which is to benefit five States including New Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, will be built on the river Tons on Uttarakhand-Himachal Pradesh border.

The company signed the term sheets for the financing options with the Chinese banks in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently on an official visit to China.
Subject to final agreements and requisite approvals, Bharti Airtel can draw these funds over a long availability period, depending on its financing requirements.

The initiative marks a significant milestone for the Bank's international operations. In March 2003, ICICI Bank had set-up a representative office in Shanghai to develop strong relationships with Chinese banks and corporates for their India linked banking needs.
The representative office has been upgraded to a branch keeping in mind the rising trade volumes between India and China. With this branch, the Bank aims to provide greater support to Chinese and Indian corporates in their cross-border business interests.
Ms. Chanda Kochhar, MD & CEO, ICICI Bank said, "Our branch in Shanghai will allow us to play a greater role in the growing trade and investment opportunity between India and China. We foresee a heightened amount of bilateral activity taking place between the two countries in the near future. With the opening of this branch, ICICI Bank is strategically poised to take advantage of the increased opportunities."
The Shanghai Branch received regulatory approval in March 2015 to commence operations. It will begin with 17 banking professionals spread across different functions including corporate banking, operations, finance and treasury.

Axis Bank, India’s third largest private sector bank, will roll out 20,000 point of sale (POS) terminals at merchants for NFC-based card payment acceptance to facilitate tap and pay or contactless payments.
The Bank also announced the start of issuance of NFC based EMV Chip cards on both credit and debit cards.
It plans to enable all its POS terminals with NFC based card acceptance, with an immediate roll out at 20,000 terminals, scaling it up to 50,000 terminals by end of the year, the bank said in a statement.
On Thursday, the Reserve Bank of India relaxed two factor norms for NFC (Near-Field communications) based payments below Rs. 2000.
Over 60% of transactions on Credit and Debit cards today are below the threshold of Rs. 2,000 and this is likely to increase with the new guidelines.
Globally, NFC based payments are popular in categories like Quick service restaurants, Department stores, Campus payments, Cab charges etc.

Palestinians on 15 May 2015 observed the 67th anniversary of the 1948 Palestinian Nakba Day. As part of it, dozens of Palestinians staged a march in southern Gaza Strip and vowed to return to their ancestral Homeland.
The march was organised by Hamas near the Israeli border in the town of Al-Qarara in eastern Khan Younis.
