1. Government makes PAN mandatory for central excise registration
Union Government has made Permanent Account Number (PAN) mandatory for private firms seeking central excise registration.
As per the new rules, the PAN registration will now be given within two days of filing online applications to improve the ease in doing business in manufacturing.
In this regard Union Finance Ministry has issued an order that clearly mentions that applicants seeking registration shall mandatorily quote PAN of the proprietor or the legal entity being registered in the application form.
However in the new rules, government departments are exempted from the requirement of quoting PAN in their online application.

2. World’s largest flag unfurled in Tunisia
World’s largest flag was unfurled at an event in Ong Jmel in the southern desert area of Tunisia.
Tunisian national flag of the size of 19 football pitches was unfurled in a bid to set a Guinness World Record and promote patriotism in the face of Islamist extremism.
In this event hundreds of Tunisian’s participated and an honour guard of troops also saluted the red and on the sand to the strains of the national anthem.
The flag of 104,544 square metre was made using 80 kilometres of fabric and weighed arounf 12.6 tonnes.

3. Microsoft launches Edu-Cloud for digital education
 Microsoft has launched Edu-Cloud, a cloud computing based offering to provide digital learning and teaching in schools and higher educational institutions.
Announcing this at a press conference here on Tuesday, Microsoft India Chairman Bhaskar Pramanik said Edu-Cloud will enhance the productivity of teachers and students with applications for teaching, learning, and administrative processes. The students will have to use a tablet or any computing device to use the service.
Microsoft has also announced a tie-up with the Chaitanya group of educational institutions which will adopt Edu-Cloud as the first tie-up for the offering. The Hyderabad-based corporate education group has already got 14,000 students with tablets to use Edu-Cloud.

4. National Waterways Bill 2015 introduced in Lok Sabha
 Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday introduced The National Waterways Bill 2015 in the Lok Sabha.
The Bill proposes to convert 101 rivers across the country into waterways to promote it as a cheaper mode of transportation, as compared to roads and railways.
So far, the Government has declared only five river stretches as waterways.
In an earlier event, Gadkari had said the Bill would help the Government reduce the traffic burden on the roads by promoting water transportation, where the cost is barely 50 paise a km, compared with ₹1 for the Railways and ₹1.5 a km for roads.
Inland waterways, comprising rivers, lakes, canals, creeks and backwaters, extend in about 14,500 km across the country.

5. Michael Blake, Oscar-winning ‘Dances With Wolves’ writer passes away
Michael Blake, the Oscar-winning writer of ‘Dances With Wolves’ novel passed away in Tucson, Arizona, after a long battle with cancer.  He was 69.
The novel Dances With Wolves after adapted into movie in 1990 was a major hit and had earned Blake an Academy Award (Oscar) for the screenplay.
The movie had won seven Oscars including Best Picture category.

6. CCI rejects charges against Flipkart, other e-commerce majors
 The Competition Commission has rejected allegations of unfair business practices against five online retail majors - Flipkart, Snapdeal, Amazon, Jabong and Myntra - as it did not find any prima facie evidence of violations.
The complaints were filed against Flipkart India Pvt Ltd, Jasper Infotech Pvt Ltd, Xerion Retail Pvt Ltd, Amazon Seller Services Pvt Ltd and Vector E-commerce Pvt Ltd.
After looking into the matter for the past few months, the fair trade watchdog has ruled that these entities did not violate competition norms by indulging in cartelisation or by abusing their dominant position.
 It was alleged that e-commerce websites and product sellers entered into exclusive agreements to sell products exclusively on select portals.
In recent months, there have been rising concerns that discount sales launched by various e-commerce websites, including Flipkart were anti-competitive in nature.
With regard to exclusive agreements, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) said that such pacts need not result in appreciable adverse effect on competition.

7. PM Modi's 3-nation tour starts from May 14
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay a three-nation official visit to China, Mongolia and Republic of Korea from May 14 to May 19, ministry of external affairs announced on Tuesday.
In China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Xian, Beijing and Shanghai from May 14 to May 16 and will hold bilateral meetings with Chinese leadership, the MEA said.
He will also attend an event organized by the Indian community.
PM's official engagements in Mongolia will be on May 17. This will be the first ever visit by a Prime Minister of India to Mongolia.
On May 18 and May 19, PM will be in the Republic of Korea. He will hold bilateral discussions with President Park Geun-hye.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also scheduled to meet with important business leaders in Seoul, according to MEA.

8. Nawaz Sharif inaugurates first-ever solar energy project in Pakistan
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif  inaugurated Pakistan's first-ever solar energy project built with Chinese assistance, a step forward to provide relief to people in the country plagued by perpetual power shortages.
Sharif inaugurated the 100 megawatt (MW) unit of Quaid-e -Azam Solar Park in Bhawalpur district of Punjab province.
