1. Federal Bank, New India Assurance tie up to offer insurance
Kerala-based Federal Bank has tied up with New India Assurance Co. Ltd to implement Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, the personal accident insurance scheme announced by the Government for savings bank account holders in the age group of 18 to 70 years.
“The Insurance scheme provides a cover of Rs. 2 lakh against death/permanent disability caused due to accident, at an annual premium of Rs. 12.
All Savings Bank account holders in the age group of 18 to 70 years are entitled to join the scheme. The scheme commences from June 1, 2015. Customers of Federal Bank can join the scheme by submitting the duly filled in consent cum declaration form at their branches before May 31, 2015.

2. KGB ties up with Xpress Money
Kerala Gramin Bank (KGB), the largest regional rural bank in the country, has tied up with Xpress Money for remittance services across 500-plus branches in Kerala. The service will be facilitated by Muthoot Forex Ltd, Xpress Money’s principal agent. The alliance will provide KGB customers access to Xpress Money’s services.

3. PM Narendra Modi joined Chinese social media platform Weibo
Prime Minister Narendra Modi  joined Chinese social media platform Weibo.  Weibo is the main microblogging service of China.   Weibo is often referred to as Twitter of China.
PM Modi joined Chinese social media platform just weeks before his scheduled visit to China. Modi will start off his three-nation tour to the East on 14 May 2015 with China, Mongolia and Later South Korea.
Sina Weibo is a Chinese microblogging website. It is similar to Twitter and Facebook. It is one of the most popular sites in China, in use by well over 30% of Internet users, with a market penetration similar to the United States' Twitter.

4. Indigenously developed Akash Weapon System (AWS) inducted into Indian Army
The first regiment of the indigenously developed Surface-to-Air missile Akash Weapon System (AWS) on 5 May 2015 was inducted into the Indian Army in New Delhi.
It is part of the orders for two regiments placed by the Army worth about 19000 crore rupees.
Features of Akash Weapon System (AWS)
• Each regiment of AWS consists of six launchers with each launcher having three missiles.
• It consists of sophisticated radars and control systems to guide the missile towards the target.
• Each missile weighs 720 kg having a length of 5.78 meters.
• It is fully automated and can simultaneously engage multiple targets in all weather conditions including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in addition to helicopters and fighter planes.
• It has a large operational range from a low altitude of 30 metres to a maximum of up to 20 km.
• At 96 per cent indigenisation, it represents a major capability development for a crucial weapon system.
• Unlike the Air Force version, which was inducted in March 2012, the Army variant of Akash is designed for high mobility and can be quickly moved to any operational theatres based on necessity.
• Akash has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation and is being built by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).
• It was originally planned as part of the five missiles under the Integrated Guided Missile Development (IGMD) Programme initiated in 1984.

5. Union Cabinet cleared 119th Constitutional Amendment Bill on LBA between India and Bangladesh
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi  approved the 119th Constitutional Amendment Bill on Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) between India and Bangladesh.
Under the land boundary agreement, India and Bangladesh will exchange several enclaves which are under each other's adverse possession. The bill also includes the territories in Assam in addition to territories of West Bengal, Tripura and Meghalaya.
The bill will need ratification by the Parliament and would also require ratification of at least 50 percent of the state legislatures before it comes into effect.

6. France signed 7.02 billion US dollar agreement with Qatar to supply 24 Rafale fighter jets
France  signed a 7.02 billion US dollars agreement with Qatar to supply 24 Dassault Aviation-built Rafale fighter jets. This is the third contract to sell Rafale Fighter jets after contracts with Egypt and India.
Agreement was signed by the French President Francois Hollande and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha, Qatar.
The agreement also includes training of 36 Qatari pilots and 100 technicians by the French military. It will also provide for the training of a number of Qatari intelligence officers.
Since the first sale of Rafale fighter jets to Egypt, the French planes have become the best-seller worldwide and it could help to make France the world’s second biggest supplier of weaponry after the United States.
The Rafale export deals are expected to give 21 billion euro in 2015 to French economy, a significant boost for a still-struggling French economy.
The Dassault Rafale is a French twin-engine, canard delta wing, multirole fighter aircraft designed. It was introduced in 2001 and has been built by Dassault Aviation.
Since its introduction, the Rafales have been used in combat operations in Afghanistan, Libya, Mali and Iraq.

7. Mangaluru to host 'India Open of Surfing' from May 29-31
Mangaluru will host the first edition of the ‘India Open of Surfing’ at Panambur beach from May 29 to 31.
Rammohan Paranjape, Vice-President of the Surfing Federation of India, said that the event is being jointly organised by the Surfing Federation of India, Karnataka Tourism Department, Panambur Beach Tourism Project, and the Mulki-based Mantra Surf Club.
There will be competition stand-up paddle race, and nearly 100 participants from across India are likely to participate in the three-day national surfing championship.
Apart from domestic participants, surfers from Sri Lanka, Maldives, Australia and France are likely to participate, Paranjape said. ‘India Open of Surfing’ will be judged by international judges, and officials from the International Surfing Association will oversee the event.
Bollywood actor, Suniel Shetty, who has been an ardent supporter of surfing, is the brand ambassador of the event, he said.There will be demonstrations on kite-board surfing and wind surfing during the three days.

8. Rajasthan Government signed deal with NHM, UNICEF & GAIN to counter malnourishment
Rajasthan Government 5 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Health Mission (NHM), UNICEF and GAIN (Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition) in Jaipur to tackle the severe problem of malnourishment of the state. Initially, the programme will be implemented in thirteen districts in which more than 10000 children have been identified as malnourished. To deal with malnourishment, a special management programme will be organised on the community basis. 
At present, Rajasthan has 40 malnourishment treatment centres, which are equipped with 10000 beds. It is also facilitated with 107 centres with six beds. 

9. Lu Ping, Chinese diplomat who oversaw Hong Kong transition, died
Lu Ping, the Chinese diplomat who oversaw Hong Kong’s transition from British to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, died in Beijing on 3 May 2015. He was 87.
Ping, the China’s Chief negotiator during the transfer of Hong Kong to China, termed Hong Kong’s last British Governor Chris Patten (1992–1997) as a “sinner of a thousand years” for making the territory’s elections more democratic or his unilateral electoral reform proposals.
Ping was appointed Director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office (HKMAO) in 1990 and retired in 1997. He had also helped in drafting the mini Constitution of Hong Kong.

10. Former UPASI president M D Balakrishna passes away
MD Balakrishna, former president of United Planters' Association of Southern India (UPASI) and past chairman of Karnataka Planters Assocation (KPA), passed away on May 1.
Balakrishna, 79 years, hailed from the renowned Makhonahalli family in Mudigere Taluq in Chikmagalur and owned coffee estates - Netraconda and Karkie Estates, Koppa, Chikmagalur.
He was the President of UPASI during the year 1988-89 and Chairman of KPA during the year 1976-77. The last rites was held on May 3 at his family owned rice mill compound where his father A S Dyave Gowda and mother Puttamma were cremated.

11. World Asthma Day 2015 observed with theme You Can Control Your Asthma
World Asthma Day 2015 was observed globally on 5 May 2015. Theme of the year is You Can Control Your Asthma and sub-theme is It’s Time to Control Asthma.
World Asthma Day takes place on the first Tuesday of May. The inaugural World Asthma Day was held in 1998.
The day is annually organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to improve asthma awareness and care around the world.
