1. Prashant Pathrabe appointed as Interim Director of Film and Television Institute of India
Prashant Pathrabe was appointed as Interim Director of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). His appointment was approved by Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry. However, he will also continue to serve as the Director of Press Information Bureau (PIB) unit in Pune.
Pathrabe succeeded incumbent Director DJ Narain who superannuated the office on 4 July 2015. Pathrabe is Maharashtra-based senior Indian Information Service (IIS) officer of 1992 batch.
Pathrabe had been associated with the media field for nearly two decades. Previously he had served as director of the National Film Archive of India (NFAI). He had also worked in Doordarshan News and AIR News in Mumbai.
2. RBI signed Special Currency Swap Agreement with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka
The Reserve Bank of India signed a Special Currency
Swap Agreement with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
Under the arrangement, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka can draw up to 1.1 billion US dollar for a maximum period of six months. This special arrangement is in addition to the existing Framework on Currency Swap Arrangement for the SAARC Member Countries.
Earlier on 25 March 2015, the Reserve Bank of India had signed a Currency Swap Agreement with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka for 400 million US dollar under the existing SAARC Currency Swap Framework within the overall limit of 2 billion US dollar.
The swap arrangements are intended to provide a backstop line of funding for the SAARC member countries to meet any balance of payments and liquidity crises till longer term arrangements are made or if there is need for short-term liquidity due to stressed market conditions.
The proposal to extend the additional currency swap facility of 1.1 billion US dollar for a limited period was decided by the Union Government in April 2015 based on the recommendation of the Reserve Bank of India for mitigating the possible currency volatility in the spirit of strengthening India’s bilateral relations and economic ties with Sri Lanka.
3. India's first private air freight station all set to open in Chennai
India’s first air freight station in the private sector has come up at Irungattukottai near Chennai. The first AFS in the country was set up in 2007 inside Central Warehousing Corporation in the city.
Set up by the city-based Indev Logistics at a cost of ₹50 crore, the AFS will reduce congestion at the gateway airports and the carrier operators can choose the AFS as a final destination for cargo delivery.
The major advantages of the AFS include faster evacuation of cargo from the major gateway airports; an integrated supply chain, minimised transaction logistics cost; and tracking of the mobility and movement of the cargo.
4. India and Myanmar to strengthen defence ties
India and Myanmar have announced plans to strengthen their defence cooperation during a joint consultative commission (JCC) meeting held in New Delhi. This meeting was chaired by Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Myanmar’s Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin.
5. EU approves 7 Billion Euro Short-Term Loan to Greece
European Union (EU) has approved a short-term loan of 7.16 billion euros to Greece after it was backed by the 28 member states. This loan will allow Greece to pay its huge debt to European Central Bank (ECB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) till new bailout plan is ratified. The loan will be given through the European Financial Stabilisation Mechanism (EFSM) which is a rescue fund set up during the first time bailout of Greece in 2010. But presently it covers the whole of the 28 EU member nations and not just the 19 eurozone members. This loan fund will be officially for three months, but looking at present debt crisis of Greece it can be sustained until 20 August 2015.
6. Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez suspended from Bowling in International Cricket for 1 Year
International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned Pakistan’s all-rounder cricketer Mohammad Hafeez from bowling in international cricket for a period of one year. He was banned after he failed in ICC’s independent assessment on his suspected bowling action which violated permitted 15-degree limit. He will be able to reassess his bowling action only after the completion of this 1 year period. Hafeez had tested his bowling action in Sri Ramachandra University in Chennai after his actions violated the limit during the second Test match against Sri Lanka.
7. Uruguay’s soccer legend Alcides Ghiggia passes away
Uruguayan soccer legend Alcides Ghiggia has passed away due to heart attack in Montevideo, Uruguay. He was 88. He had scored the winning goal against Brazil in the final match of World Cup 1950 which had helped Uruguay to win World Cup for the second time. He had scored the deciding goal 10 minutes from time when the final match had tied at 1-1 goals.
8. Ottappalam in Kerala to have India’s first Defence Industrial Park
India’s first defence industrial park will be set up at Ottappalam in Palakkad district of Kerala. In this regard, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) of Union Government has approved a proposal for this defence park forwarded by the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation. The proposed defence park will be established as part of Union Government’s flagship Make in India programme and state government’s Make in Kerala project. The park will have modern common infrastructure facilities aimed at favourable environment to component manufacturers of the defence industry. Union government also has agreed to bring the park under the Modified Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation Scheme (MIIUS). Ottappalam was selected for the defence park in view of its strategic location in terms connectivity and other common facilities such as dedicated power and water supply along with infrastructure for the research and development centre.
