1. Ram Sevak Sharma appointed as Chairman of TRAI
Ram Sevak Sharma was appointed as the Chairman of telecom regulator
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). He succeeded Rahul Khullar who had retired in May 2015.
Sharma is also set to retire in September 2015 as a Secretary for Department of Electronics and Information Technology. Ram Sevak Sharma is an IAS officer of 1978 batch, Jharkhand Cadre.
He has worked as Chief Secretary of the Jharkhand government and had also worked in the Department of Economic Affairs dealing with bilateral and multilateral development agencies like World Bank and Asian Development Bank.
2. Swati Maliwal took charge as Chairperson of Delhi Commisson for Women
Swati Maliwal took charge as the Chairperson of Delhi Commisson for Women (DCW), along with three other members. Her appointment was approved by Lt Governor Najeeb Jung. Maliwal, an RTI activist, succeeded Barkha Singh.
Maliwal had taken charge as the DCW's Chief on 20 July 2015 itself, but her appointment was struck down by the Lt Governor Najeeb Jung at that time.
Maliwal is the wife of Aam Aadmi Party leader Navin Jaihind and has been an advisor to Kejriwal on public grievances and handles his Janta Samwad. She has been associated with him since India Against Corruption (IAC) days.
3. Terrorist attacked Dinanagar town of Gurdaspur in Punjab killing seven people
Dinanagar town in Gurdaspur district of Punjab was in news in July 2015 it witnessed a terrorist attack that killed seven people including 4 policemen.
The terrorist attack was the first such attack in Punjab in two decades or since the end of Khalistani terrorism in 1980s.
All the terrorists were killed by the special units of the Punjab Police SWAT after fierce gunbattle lasting over 11 hours.
Dinanagar town, which is just 12km from the India-Pakistan border, is located 25km from the Jammu and Kashmir border and 235km from Chandigarh.
4. Teva to buy Allergan generic drug business for USD 40.5 billion
Israel’s largest drug maker Teva Pharmaceutical agreed to buy generic drugs business of Allergan Plc for USD 40.5 billion. According to the agreement Teva will make cash payment of USD 33.75 billion and USD 6.75 billion of its stock for Allergan. This is the largest acquisition done by any company in Israel’s history. The acquisition will consolidate Teva’s position as world’s largest generic drug maker. Earlier Teva had projected to buy Mylan pharmaceuticals for USD 40 billion but later dropped the deal. This deal will place Teva into list of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies of the world.
5. Mexico defeated Jamaica to win CONCACAF Gold Cup Football tournament
Mexico defeated Jamaica 3-1 in the final of CONCACAF Gold Cup football tournament to win the regional tournament for the record seventh time. The final was played at Philadelphia, US.
From the EL Tri side (nickname of Mexican football team), the goals were scored by Captain and midfielder Andred Guardado, forward Jesus Corona and forward Oribe Peralta, while Darren Mattocks scored the lone goal for Jamaica in the 78th minute.

World Hepatitis Day is being observed every year on July 28 around the globe. Focus of the day: To spread awareness about viral hepatitis, that causes acute and chronic disease and kills around 1.4 million people every year. 7. Eminent Physicist P. Hariharan passes away
Eminent Indian physicist Dr Parameswaran Hariharan passed away in California, United States. He was 89. Physicist career Hariharan had contributed in various researches including in the design of a new 3-beam interferometer, first practical radial-shear interferometer and double passed Fabry-Perot interferometer. He was also the first physicist to apply digital phase-shifting techniques to holographic interferometry in order to measure strains and vector displacements. He had developed multicolour rainbow holograms and improvised multicolour reflection holograms. In his entire career, Dr. Hariharan had authored 4 books and published more than 200 research papers.
8. Rajesh Exports buys Valcambi for Rs. 2560 crore
Bengaluru based gold Jewellery manufacturing company Rajesh Exports Ltd (REL) bought the world’s largest gold refining company Valcambi from US-based mining company Newmont Mining Corporation. REL had to fetch over 2560 crore rupees all in cash to buy Valcambi refinery. Valcambi generates on an average 945 tons of gold that is more than India’s demand of 900 tons per year. This development will significantly add revenues and profitability of REL group and alone can meet demand of world’s largest gold consumer ‘India’. This acquisition will help REL to secure raw material supplies and will also facilitate its global expansion in gold business. On acquisition, REL will become an integrated global player covering precious metal refining business as well as gold jewellery making business.
