1. BSNL launches mobile wallet service ‘Speed Pay’
State run telecom giant Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) launched pre-paid card linked mobile wallet service ‘Speed Pay’. It was launched by Union Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in New Delhi. This service was launched by BSNL has launched the service in partnership with IT company Pyro.
2. Guinness Book Recognises Madhya Pradesh’s World Record in Washing Hands
The Guinness Book of World Records has recognised a record created in Madhya Pradesh on ‘World Hand washing Day’ in 2014. The mega hand washing event was held on 15 October 2014 to create awareness about hygiene by washing hands with soap. It was organised in all the 51 districts of Madhya Pradesh in over 13 thousand places. In it more than 12 lakh 78 thousand students had washed their hand simultaneously. This record broke the earlier the world record which was jointly held by Argentina, Peru and Mexico.
3.Former Chief Justice of India Y K Sabharwal passed away
Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Y K Sabharwal on 3 July 2015 passed away following a prolonged illness. He was 73. He is survived by two sons Chetan and Nitin.
Born on 14 January 1942, Justice Sabharwal mainly practised in civil and constitutional cases. He was elevated as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 1986 and became its permanent judge in April 1987.
He later went on to become the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court in 1999, from where he was elevated as a judge of the apex court in 2000.
4. Army launched Operation Shiva to secure Amarnath Yatra
To provide security to those devotees taking part in the 59-day-long annual Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir, Indian Army in first week of July 2015 launched Operation Shiva. The Yatra started on 2 July 2015.
The operation was launched on the basis of intelligence report suggesting that a group of 15 terrorists are likely to attempt a strike.
The operation will include Rashtriya Rifles unit, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for surveillance of Yatra route and cave shrine, combing of forests located along the Yatra track, Infantry Unit of Army, companies of Paramilitary Forces, CRPF and BSF
5. Adani group to set up ₹4,536-cr solar park in TN
The Adani Group, a global infrastructure player, will set up a ₹4,536 crore solar park in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu to generate 648-MW of solar power.
The company has signed a memorandum of understanding with Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd in the presence of Chief Minister, J Jayalalithaa, to set up five solar power generation facilities in Kazhuthi taluk, says a State Government release.
Adani Group Managing Director Rajesh Adani gave a detailed presentation on the project to the Chief Minister and officials at the State Secretariat.
This is the first major solar power project in the recent times in Tamil Nadu, which plans to buy nearly 2,000 MW of solar power by the end of this calendar year, said R Viswanathan, Minister of Electricity and Non-Conventional Energy Development, recently at a seminar.
The State Government has set a target to buy around 1,000 MW of power every year
6. Karnataka Vikas Grameen Bank plans SHG branches
A regional rural bank is now planning to set up exclusive branches for self-help groups (SHGs) under its area of operation.
On the reason for planning such branches, he said the bank has observed that some branch managers find it difficult to service the needs of SHGs along with other customers.
Whenever SHGs come for transactions in the bank, they come in large numbers. During that time, other customers find it difficult to carry out banking activities in such branches. He said branch managers are also supposed to visit villages, participate in SHG meetings and check their books.
In order to give more thrust and to have a good servicing of SHGs, the bank wants to open specialised branches for financing them, he said.
A specialised branch not only helps the SHGs but also improves the customer service in the existing branches.
KVGB has credit linked around 71,000 SHGs to the tune of ₹687 crore since the implementation of the concept in 1994. At present, around 21,000 SHGs are credit-linked by the bank.
7. Tata welcomes Google’s ‘Internet Saathi’
The empowerment of India’s disadvantaged women has been at the core of Tata Trusts’ many activities. A “special tie with a company (Google) that has digitalised the world and brought connectivity and knowledge to millions of people” is what brought Tata Trusts, chaired by Ratan Tata, to ‘Internet Saathi’, a Google India initiative.
With this programme, the trust has been able to join hands and help in the quest to digitise India, said Ratan Tata, who was present at the event in Mumbai.
Tata Trusts decided to play a role in supporting Google to help reach out to to rural women.
