1. Discus thrower Seema Punia qualifies for Rio 2016 Olympics
1. Asian Games discus throw gold medal winner Seema Punia qualified for the Rio Olympics with a 62.62m effort at the Pat Young's Throwers Classic 2016 at Salinas in the United States.
2. Punia crossed the Rio Games qualification standard of 61.00m at the Hartnell College Throwers Complex.
The 32-year old discus thrower from Haryana defeated 2008 Olympic discus throw champion Stephanie Brown-Trafton of United States of America for the gold.
3. This will be Punia’s third Olympic Games appearance. She took part in the games in 2004 and 2012.
She is the 19th Indian track and field athlete to have qualified for Rio Olympics.
2. President Pranab Mukherjee presented Malti Gyan Peeth Puraskar 2016
1. The President of India Pranab Mukherjee presented the Malti Gyan Peeth Puraskar for the year 2016 at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
2. The award was conferred upon 15 teachers from Punjab for their rare contribution in the field of education.
The awardees were facilitated with 1 lakh rupees cash, certificate of excellence, a Robe of Honour and a medal.
3. The initiative was mainly taken to promote the quality teaching in the schools besides encouraging the hundred percent attendance of girl students in the government schools.
3. Sunrisers Hyderabad win 2016 Indian Premier League title
1.Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has won the ninth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). It is their maiden IPL title. In the final match played at Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore (Karnataka), SRH defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by eight runs. SRH had won the toss in final summit and had chosen to bat first. 2. Batting first, SRH had set the target of 209 runs to their opponent team. However the RCB failed to reach the target score. It should be noted that RCB has lost 3 finals after they were defeated in finals of 2009 and 2011 editions.

4. Vice Admiral AR Karve takes charge of Southern Naval Command
1. Vice-Admiral A R Karve took charge as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command (SNC). Prior to this appointment, he was serving as the Chief of Personnel at IHQ MoD (Navy), at Delhi.
2. He will succeed Vice Admiral Girish Luthra who has been appointed as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command.
5. 29 May: International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers
1. The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers was observed on 29 May 2016 to honour the work of UN peacekeepers.
2. Honour the memory of the UN peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the cause of peace. Pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in UN peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication and courage.
