1. PM Narendra Modi launches Housing for All scheme in rural areas
1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 20 November 2016 formally launched the Housing for All scheme in rural areas under to provide an environmentally safe and protected pucca house to every rural household by 2022.
2. The scheme is also named as the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (Gramin).
3. Highlights of the Scheme
• In the first phase, the target is to complete one crore houses by March 2019.
• A minimum support of around 1.5 lakh rupees to 1.6 lakh rupees is now available to a household.
• If the beneficiary desires, there is also a provision of Bank loan of up to 70000 rupees.
• All the beneficiaries are selected through a completely transparent process using the Socio Economic Census 2011 data.
• It provides for skilling 5 lakh Rural Masons by 2019 and allows over 200 different housing designs across the country based on housing typologies, environmental hazards and the household requirements.
• It targets the poor households and uses ICT and space technology to confirm correct selection of beneficiaries and progress of work.
• The entire payments will be done through IT/DBT mode with Aadhaar linked Bank accounts to ensure complete transparency and accountability.
2. World Television Day Observed on 21 November
1. The United Nations’ (UN) World Television Day was observed in countries across the world on 21 November 2016. The day is aimed at recognizing the important role television plays in presenting issues that affect people globally.
2. It is also meant to honor the role Television plays as the pillar of freedom of expression and as a promoter of cultural diversity.
3. UP CM Akhilesh Yadav launched integrated emergency services UP-100
1. The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav launched state-wide integrated emergency services UP-100. The service was launched on 19 November 2016 from Lucknow.
2. UP-100 is the official name of the Police Emergency Management System of Uttar Pradesh. Earlier, it was known as dial 100 Project. The state government has allocated 2200 crore rupees for the project.
3. Highlights of UP-100 project
• It is a high-tech centralised emergency system and was established with an aim to provide public safety across the state.
• It is a 24-hour service.
• It will ensure that the police reach the venue of a caller in a maximum fifteen minutes in urban areas and twenty minutes in rural areas.
4. Olympic Champion Eliud Kipchoge Wins Delhi Half Marathon
1. As expected, Eliud Kipchoge, Kenya’s reigning Olympic marathon champion bagged the winner’s title in Delhi Half Marathon on 20 November 2016. While he was declared winner in men’s category, Ethiopia’s Worknesh Degefa claimed the women’s title.
2. Kipchoge, who won the gold medal at Rio Olympics in August 2016, is considered to be one of the greatest marathon runners of all times.
5. NASA launches Next Generation Weather Satellite GOES-R
1. The National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) on 20 November 2016 launched the highly advanced geostationary weather satellite Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R (GOES-R).
2. The Satellite was launched by NASA on behalf of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It was launched on board of Atlas 5 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.
3. Highlights of the Satellite
• It will boost the weather observation capabilities of the US, leading to more accurate and timely forecasts, watches and warnings.
• It will be into the operations within a year after undergoing testing and validation of new instruments including the first operational lightning mapper in geostationary orbit.
• Its primary instrument Advanced Baseline Imager will provide images of Earth’s weather, oceans and environment with 16 different spectral bands.
6. China launches world’s longest super-secure quantum communication line
1. China has launched world’s longest super-secure quantum communication line connecting Hefei, capital of Anhui province to Shanghai, the country’s financial hub.
2. The super-secure quantum communication line is 712-km in length. It boasts of ultra-high security making it impossible to wiretap, intercept or crack the information transmitted through them.
7. Union Government launches Pehchan identity cards for artisans
1. Union textile Minister Smriti Irani launched a scheme of ‘Pehchan’ identity cards to artisans in Ahmedabad. She also inaugurated thematic handicrafts exhibition.
2. The upgraded ‘pehchan’ cards were distributed to artisans from five clusters of Gujarat namely Jamnagar, Naroda, Surendranagar, Amreli and Kalol. Besides, minister also announced that to give tool kits and safety equipment women and BPL artisans for metal craft for free of cost in a bid to encourage women.
8. India successfully test-fires twin trial of Prithvi-II missile
1. India today successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear capable Prithvi-II missile twice in quick succession as part of a user trial by the army from a test range at Chandipur in Odisha.
2. In salvo mode, the two surface-to-surface missiles which have a strike range of 350 km and are capable of carrying 500 kg to 1,000 kg of warheads were successfully test-fired in quick succession from mobile launcher from launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at around 9.35 am, defence sources said.
3. A similar twin trial had been conducted on October 12, 2009 from the same base where both tests were successful.
4. The missile is thrusted by liquid propulsion twin engines.
9. New ‘Super Earth’ found near the Sun
1. Scientists have discovered a new ’super Earth’ planet with a mass around 5.4 times that of the Earth, orbiting a very bright star near to the Sun.
2. The exoplanet, GJ 536 b, is not within the star’s habitable zone, but its short orbital period of 8.7 days and the luminosity of its star make it an attractive candidate for investigating its atmospheric composition, researchers said. The star, GJ 536, is a red dwarf near to the Sun.
