1. Rajasthani writer Satya Narayan chosen for 2016 Bihari Puraskar
1. Eminent Rajasthani litterateur Dr Satya Narayan was chosen for the 26th Bihari Puraskar 2016 by the K K Birla Foundation. He was been chosen for his Hindi book titled Yeh Ek Dunia published in 2010.
2. His Yeh Ek Dunia is a meticulous depiction of various circumstances of life in contemporary world. In it he has built a model of new creativity and attempts to enter unseen aspects or dimensions, where human experiences and conscience are more important than life situations of contemporary time zone.
2. Astronomers discover universe’s biggest Galaxy Supercluster near Milky Way
1. A team of international astronomers has discovered Vela super cluster, one of the biggest super galaxy clusters near the Milky Way.
2. It was spotted by a research team of astronomers from South Africa, Australia and Europe with help slew of telescopes including the Anglo-Australian Telescope (Sydney) and South African Large Telescope (Cape Town).
3. Govt names Viral V Acharya as RBI Deputy Governor
1. Government today appointed Viral V Acharya, a professor of Economics in the Department of Finance at the New York University (NYU), new Deputy Governor at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
2. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet cleared the appointment for three years.
3. He is taking over at a time when the central bank is facing criticism for repeated changes in the rules related to deposit and withdrawal of money, post-demonetisation.
4. Cabinet clears ordinance to penalise those with demonetised notes
1. The Union Cabinet on Wednesday promulgated an ordinance that would end the liability of the government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to the scrapped ₹ 500 and ₹ 1,000 notes.
2. It would also penalise people holding more than 10 of the demonetised notes beyond March 31, 2017 with a fine of ₹ 50,000 as well as a criminal liability.
3. The government had planned to amend the RBI Act but could not do it in the Winter Session of Parliament that saw protests by Opposition parties on demonetisation.
4. Under government guidelines, the demonetised notes can be deposited in bank branches till December 30. Those holding the notes beyond the period will have to deposit it in the RBI office.
5. Tata Motors signs up Akshay Kumar as brand ambassador
1. Tata Motors today roped in Bollywood star Akshay Kumar as brand ambassador for its commercial vehicle (CV) business unit.
2. Tata Motors’ association with Kumar for commercial vehicles will be supported by a multi-media campaign, beginning in the first week of January 2017
6. Former top IAS officer Anil Baijal to be new Delhi LG
1. Career bureaucrat Anil Baijal looks set to become the next Lt Governor of Delhi, a post which has fallen vacant after sudden resignation of Najeeb Jung.
2. A 1969 batch IAS officer, Baijal had served as Union Home Secretary under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government besides holding key positions in other ministries.
3. 70-year-old Baijal, whose appointment papers have been sent to President Pranab Mukherjee for his approval, had retired from service in 2006 as Secretary, Urban Development Ministry. He is a former vice chairman of Delhi Development Authority.
4. Baijal was actively associated with the designing and roll-out of Rs. 60,000 crore Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) launched by the Manmohan Singh government.
7. Gohel breaks 117-year-old record
1. Gujarat’s 26-year-old opening batsman Samit Gohel on Tuesday broke a 117-year-old record in first-class cricket by notching up the highest score while carrying his bat through the innings of 359 not out during his team’s Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Odisha.
2. While Hanif Mohammed’s epic 499 remains the highest score by an opener in first-class cricket, no one has scored more than Gohel while remaining not out in his team’s score of 641 here.
8. Govt launches IVRS platform to tackle call drops
1. In a bid to tackle the call drop menace, Government has launched an Integrated Voice Response System (IVRS) system at multiple locations including Delhi and Mumbai to obtain direct feedback from subscribers on call quality.
2. The feedback will be shared with operators so they can take corrective steps in the problem areas and address the issue of call drops.
9. Twitter partners with ICICI Bank for advanced customer care
1. Twitter and ICICI Bank announced a partnership on Wednesday that is aimed at integrating additional digital customer care support features to benefit customers with direct online response to their queries and feedback in real-time, Twitter said in a statement.
2. The social networking platform said ICICI Bank is the first bank in India to implement the new features to its Twitter account @ICICIBank_Care for social customer care.
