1. France names Bernard Cazeneuve as PM

1. French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve was appointed as the new Prime Minister today after Manuel Valls resigned to seek the Socialist nomination in the presidential election

2. He was named Prime Minister after Valls presented his resignation to President Francois Hollande

2. Oscars 2017: TV anchor and comedian Jimmy Kimmel to debut as host 

1. Late night television presenter Jimmy Kimmel ended months of speculation Monday over who would host the Oscars in February -- announcing that he has been tapped to front the glitzy ceremony. 

2. It will be the first time for the comedian, who has hosted "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on ABC since it launched in 2003 and garnered praise for his work as host of this year's Emmys television awards. 

3. Shavkat Mirziyoyev wins Uzbekistan Presidential Election

1. The Prime Minister and acting President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev was elected the country's president in the presidential election, which was held on 4 December 2016.

2. As per the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan, Mirziyoyev won the election with an overwhelming vote. He garnered 88.61% of the votes, which is above the required over 50% of valid ballots to become a president.

3. The other three presidential candidates were: the National Revival Democratic Party’s Sarwar Otamuratov, who scored 2.35%, Hotamzhon Ketmonov of the People's Democratic Party scored 3.73% and the Justice Social Democratic Party’s Narimon Umarov scored 3.46% of the votes.

4. Amazon launches global startup program Launchpad in India

1. E-commerce giant Amazon on 5 December 2016 launched its global startup program named Launchpad in India. The Launchpad programme was launched with an aim to enable Indian startups to sell their products overseas.

2. In this regard, Amazon India tied up with Start Up India programme of Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), NASSCOM's 10000 Startups, Indian Angel Network (IAN), NITI Aayog, Governments of Maharashtra, Telangana and TiE. 

5. Joint maritime exercise ‘Konkan 16’ between India and UK begins

1. The annual bilateral maritime exercise Konkan 16 between the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy (British Navy) started in Mumbai, Maharashtra. 

2. The 2016 edition of the exercise (from 05 to 16 December 2016) will play an important chapter in the maritime interactions. It will familiarise navies of both countries with each other’s planning processes and further enhance synergy and inter-operability.

6. India to train Vietnam’s Sukhoi-30 fighter pilots

1. India has agreed to train Vietnam’s Sukhoi-30 fighter pilots, boosting growing defence ties between both countries. 

2. In this regard agreement was signed during bilateral discussions between Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and his Vietnamese counterpart, General Ngo Xuan Lich in New Delhi.

7. O Panneerselvam sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu

1. AIADMK leader O. Panneerselvam (65) was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu following death of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. H2. e was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao at a solemn ceremony held in the Raj Bhavan, Chennai. Besides, all 31 members of the outgoing Ministry from the Jayalalithaa’s council of Ministers were sworn in. 

3. This is for third time he has sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Earlier he had served CM for two brief periods from 2001-02 and 2014-15 after Jayalalithaa was unseated from the post by the courts on various grounds.

8. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa passes away

1. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa passed away at the Apollo Hospitals, Chennai following cardiac arrest. She was 68. 2. Jayalalithaa was one of the country’s most articulate and determined political personalities and a top film actress of the 1960s and 1970s. She was famously known as Puratchi Thalaivi Amma (revolutionary leader) or Amma.

9. India crosses $300 billion milestone

1. India has received over US $300 billion US Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) milestone between April 2000 and September 2016. 

2. The cumulative FDI inflows during the period amounted to US $310.26 billion. With this, India firmly established its credentials as a safe investment destination in the world.
