1. India has been ranked 79th out of 176 countries in the recently released Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for the year 2016 by the Berlin-based corruption watchdog Transparency International (TI).
2. The index has been complied by using World Bank data, the World Economic Forum (WEF) and other institutions It ranks countries on the score in the scale ranging from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).
3. New Zealand and Denmark in joint first place (with a score of 90), followed by Finland (3rd), Sweden (4th), Switzerland (5th), Norway (6th), Singapore (7th), Netherlands (8th), Canada (9th) and Germany (10th).

3. US Emmy award-winning actress Mary Tyler Moore has passed away
1. Emmy award-winning US actress Mary Tyler Moore has passed away at the age of 80. She was best known for her television roles in the 1960s sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show and the eponymous The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the 1970s.
4. US President Donald Trump appoints Indian-American Ajit Pai as FCC chairman
1. US President Donald Trump has appointed Indian-American attorney Uttam Dhillon as Special Assistant to the President on ethics and compliance matters, key White House position.
2. In this position, he would be part of the legal team that will serve under White House Counsel Donald F McGahn with respect to compliance and ethics matters. Earlier, Dhillon had served as Chief Oversight Counsel for the House of Representatives Financial Services Committee. Prior to joining Financial Services, Dhillon, he had served as chief of the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Counternarcotics Enforcement.
5. Russian envoy to India Alexander Kadakin passes away
1. Russian Ambassador to India, Alexander Kadakin passed away due to heart failure. He was 67. He had served as the Russian Ambassador to India since October 2009.
2. He had contributed greatly to strengthen India-Russia relations. He was best known as an Indophile who mastered Hindi, Indian politics, society and also loved Bollywood
6. Pankaj Advani wins 7th National Billiards Championship
1. India’s top seeded cueist Pankaj Advani won his seventh National Billiards Championship. In the final match held in Pune (Maharashtra), he defeated Rupesh Shah by 5-1 score.
2. Earlier, in semi-finals, he had defeated Brijesh Damani. In December 2016, Pankaj Advani had created history by winning World Billiards Championship title for the record 11th time in the 150-Up format.
1. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Friday issued the clarifications on implementation of GAAR provisions, which is to kick-in from April 1 this year..
2. General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAAR) is basically an anti-tax avoidance rule that empowers revenue authorities in a country to deny the tax benefits of transactions/arrangements which do not have any commercial substance or consideration other than achieving the tax benefit.
3. Amongst others, it has been clarified that if the jurisdiction of Foreign Portfolio Investor is finalized based on non-tax commercial considerations and the main purpose of the arrangement is not to obtain tax benefit, GAAR will not apply. GAAR will not interplay with the right of the taxpayer to select or choose method of implementing a transaction.
