1. Shoppers Stop appoints Rajiv Suri as CEO
Retail major Shoppers StopBSE 5.92 % today said it has appointed Rajiv Suri as the Chief Executive Officer of the company with effect from January 9, 2018.
The company also announced the resignation of its CFO Sanjay Chakravarti with effect from the close of business hours on December 22.
2. Rajya Sabha passes IIM Bill granting more autonomy, power to grant degrees
The Rajya Sabha today passed a bill, extending greater autonomy to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) by restricting the government's role in their functioning and granting them power to award degrees to their graduates.
The Indian Institutes of Management Bill, 2017 -- which was passed in the Lok Sabha in July this year -- grants statutory powers to the IIMs in their running including the appointment of directors and faculty members.
3. NGT chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar retires
National Green Tribunal (NGT) Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar today retired from the post after completing his five-year tenure. His successor is yet to be appointed.
A full bench reference was organised today at the NGT in court number 1 on the occasion. Justice Kumar resigned as Supreme Court judge after he was appointed NGT chairperson on December 20, 2012.
4. Bharti Airtel to acquire Millicom’s operations in Rwanda
Bharti Airtel has entered into an agreement with Millicom International Cellular S.A. to acquire the latter’s entire stake in Rwanda operations, Tigo Rwanda. The move will see the country’s telecom sector consolidating into a two-player market, with MTN being the other operator.
At present, Bharti is No.3 operator in the country. The merged entity - Bharti-Millicom – will have revenues of $80 million with a 40 per cent market share.
5. India tops list of migrants living abroad at 17 million: UN
India has topped the list of people living abroad at 17 million with about 5 million Indians residing in the Gulf region alone, according to a new UN report.
Mexico, Russia, China, Bangladesh, Syria, Pakistan and Ukraine also have large migrant populations living abroad, ranging from 6 to 11 million each, according to the 2017 International Migration Report released.
6. YES Bank, EIB to co-finance $400 mn for clean power projects
YES Bank and the European Investment Bank will co-finance $400-million funding for renewable power generation in the country. "The new financing programme will streamline financing for a range of renewable energy projects being built and operated by leading Indian corporations and private sector developers.
Of the $400-million, the EIB will fund $200 million, while the rest will be supported by YES Bank, the project promoters and other financial institutions. Under this renewable power generation initiative, several solar projects in Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Karnataka have been identified.
7. India to host meeting of 30-40 WTO members in February
Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu today said India will host a meeting of about 40 WTO members in February to muster support for food security and other issues.
India has been keenly pushing agriculture issues at the World Trade Organisation (WTO). It has also been raising its voice against bringing new issues, especially those which are not directly linked to trade, on the negotiating table.
